Job Overview

The National Nuclear Laboratory is seeking an experienced Principal Reactor Physicist to join our team. As a key member of our Nuclear and Reactor Physics group, you will play a crucial role in advancing our understanding of reactor physics and technology.

About the Role

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced reactor physicist with expertise in neutronics, thermal hydraulics, and whole-plant assessments. You will be responsible for leading technical projects and providing expert advice to customers on reactor-related matters. Your duties will include performing complex calculations using recognized code packages, authoring technical documents, and presenting your work to customers and international conferences.

Key Responsibilities
  • Initiating and leading significant national/international customer programmes related to reactor physics and technology.
  • Performing duties as a cross-discipline technical lead and subject matter expert on projects in reactor physics.
  • Supporting the development and progression of the capability strategy for reactor physics.
  • Delivering technical work to a high quality, including authoring, checking, and approval of technical calculations, documents, and presentations.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need a relevant scientific, mathematics, or engineering degree combined with significant experience in the nuclear industry. You should have comprehensive knowledge of Gen IV reactors and Advanced Nuclear Technologies (ANT) and demonstrated expertise in applying neutronics and reactor physics concepts to problem analysis. You must also have technical oversight of projects or programmes to customer requirements related to your area of expertise.

In return for your expertise, we offer a competitive salary of approximately £80,000 - £100,000 per annum, depending on your experience.
