Consumer Protection Specialist

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-focused Consumer Protection Specialist to join our team at Powys County Council. The successful candidate will assist the Trading Standards Service in providing the full range of its functions in accordance with relevant objectives, policies, and procedures.

About the role:

  • Undertake routine inspections and respond to complaints and enquiries relating to Trading Standards activities and support other officers in the team with this work and their development.
  • Provide advice and assistance to businesses, ensuring they comply with relevant legislation and guidance.
  • Work closely with other Council departments, government agencies, external partners, and members of the public to achieve our objectives.
  • Apply relevant legislation and guidance, undertaking investigations or enforcement as appropriate, and prepare case files for prosecution as needed.

About you:

  • Ideally, you will have knowledge and experience of the full range of Trading Standards legislation and enforcement, including Food Standards, Feed Hygiene, and Product Safety.
  • You will be organized, accurate, and flexible, with strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work on your own initiative.
  • You may have an appropriate professional qualification or experience in a related field, and you will be adaptable and organized, with an eye for detail and capable of working under pressure.
  • You must be willing to carry out duties at flexible times, including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Officers should ideally have previous experience of working in a local authority environment and have knowledge of the complete range of local authority Trading Standards legislation and experience of working in a statutory/regulatory role.
