Job Summary

The Worcester Polytechnic Institute is seeking a highly skilled Research Associate to join our Fire Protection Engineering team. As a key member of our laboratory staff, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our Fire Science Laboratory.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist lab staff with daily operations and maintenance of the Fire Science Laboratory
  • Perform equipment maintenance, instrument calibration, and experimental apparatus design and installation
  • Enforce laboratory safety procedures and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Provide expert operation of all equipment and tools, and train lab staff, students, and faculty
  • Supervise lab users and provide critical information to the Lab Director on laboratory status

Requirements

  • High school diploma (or GED) and 1+ years of experience in a testing or laboratory environment
  • Understanding of residential or commercial building practices with knowledge of residential and/or commercial electrical work
  • Experience with troubleshooting instrumentation and/or equipment with diagnostic equipment, especially electrical and sensor diagnostics
  • Ability to multi-task, problem solve, and prioritize assigned work
  • Basic computer skills and basic data acquisition
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Physical fitness to bend, squat, crawl, climb ladders, and lift up to 50 pounds
