Job Overview

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Occupational Therapy Assistant to join our Children's Occupational Therapy team at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The successful candidate will assist Occupational Therapists in assessments and treatments, carry out therapy programmes and treatment sessions independently, and help maintain the smooth running of the service.

The ideal candidate will be creative, organized, and enjoy working with children and their families. Experience of working with children who have functional difficulties in a community setting is essential.

We offer regular in-service training, peer group and one-to-one supervision, and opportunities for professional development.

Main Duties
  1. Assist Occupational Therapists in maintaining a small caseload of children, devising treatment activities based on therapy goals, and implementing and evaluating delegated Occupational Therapy interventions.
  2. Plan and provide programmes of therapeutic activities tailored to individual needs, and implement and evaluate delegated Occupational Therapy interventions.
  3. Provide support and advice to parents regarding their child's identified functional difficulties.
  4. Take the lead in setting up, planning, and running group sessions.
  5. Provide support and advice/education to parents, carers, and nursery staff to implement therapy programmes.
  6. Assist Occupational Therapists in upper limb treatments, including splinting, and provide specialist seating for children in nursery.
  7. Collect, deliver, and fit equipment as requested by Occupational Therapists.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • NNEB/Diploma in Childcare and Education (DCE) or equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum of two years' experience working with children in a formal setting.
  • Knowledge/experience of working in healthcare or childcare settings with relevant transferable skills.
  • Experience of working with children with neurological conditions, developmental delay, coordination difficulties, and musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Experience of multiagency/multidisciplinary working.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of training or educating others.

Skills and Abilities

  • Understanding of basic principles of Occupational Therapy with children and sound knowledge in child development.
  • Previous experience of working within a Therapy Assistant role.
  • Recognition of own capabilities and limitations and seeking guidance when required.
  • Ability to take initiative and problem-solve.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritise workload effectively.
  • Good organisation/time management.
  • Basic IT skills: word, email, internet.
  • Ability to work independently and part of a team.
