About the Job

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled School Safety Officer to join our team. As a key member of our security team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of all staff and students at Yvonne B. Miller High School and Post-Secondary Programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement daily safety and security procedures to prevent and respond to incidents
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and students
  • Monitor student behavior and deter inappropriate behavior
  • Provide crisis intervention and conflict resolution
  • Perform physical intervention techniques in accordance with procedure and training
Requirements
  • Knowledge of safety and security principles, techniques, and practices
  • Knowledge of adolescent development, including brain development, mental health, and impulse regulation
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and students
  • Ability to carry out written and oral instructions
  • Ability to monitor student behavior and deter inappropriate behavior
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution and crisis intervention
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly assess situations and provide the appropriate response
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Considerable work-related experience, including security-related experience

  • Experience supervising and interacting with at-risk or adjudicated juveniles
