About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Gas Systems Authorising Engineer to join our team at Mitie. As an Authorising Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of medical gas and pressure systems across our healthcare, education, and care and custody divisions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Audit and Inspection: Conduct regular audits and inspections of technical compliance and Standardised System of Work (SSoW) as directed by the Communities' Chief Authorising Engineer.
  • Investigation and Analysis: Conduct investigations using root cause analysis (RCA) of incidents, accidents, or failures involving management, planning, engineering systems, and equipment to prevent recurrence.
  • Site Familiarisation: Spend time becoming familiar with each site, keeping abreast of changes to sites, systems, and risks.
  • Safety Groups: Attend relevant Safety Groups as required by HTM 00 and client requirements to ensure Mitie's representation, minimising risk, driving collaboration, and creating opportunities.
  • Reporting and Recommendations: Report to the CAE and Account Manager any deficiency in the number of trained and competent Authorising Persons (APs) which may impair the provision of necessary cover for sites, systems, and disciplines.
  • Training and Development: Support the assessment and development of APs through training, based on portfolio-wide trends.
  • Technical Bulletins and Training: Work with the CAE to develop technical bulletins, toolbox talks, and training to ensure risks are mitigated and requirements are understood across the portfolio.
  • SSoW Implementation: Ensure that SSoW procedures are being implemented across the portfolio through auditing.
  • Procedure Review and Development: Work with the CAE to review current procedures, identify opportunities for improvement, and devise specific procedures, working with key stakeholders for ratification and approval.
  • Operational Restrictions: Formalise operational restrictions on equipment or areas that may arise out of specific equipment defects or maintenance, and ensure all points of demarcation and operational interface with other stakeholders are clearly identified and recorded.
Requirements
  • Qualifications and Experience: Be appropriately qualified, experienced, and competent to the discipline, ensuring CPD and development goals are maintained to maintain appointment.
  • Professional Registration: Have professional registration within the discipline, such as Chartered status, or working towards.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Possess a detailed knowledge of Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) relevant to the discipline, including contractual HTMs and the latest HTM.
  • Contract Standards: Have an understanding of contract standards, including PFI, or be willing to expand knowledge in this area.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Demonstrate strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to complete RCA and utilise data to identify deficiencies, trends, and opportunities.
  • Proven Track Record: Have a proven track record of working as an Authorising Engineer or a similar role in a relevant sector, such as healthcare, education, industry, or defence, preferably in a PFI setting.
  • Assessment and Audit Skills: Be proficient in undertaking assessment and audit of personnel and processes using technology.
