Position Overview

This role presents a unique opportunity for a Lead Nurse Practitioner specializing in ENT services within the outpatient and emergency care pathways. The successful applicant will become part of a dedicated and collaborative multidisciplinary team, which includes a dynamic group of band 6 nurses skilled in managing conditions such as epistaxis and otitis externa, as well as performing nasoendoscopy and addressing tonsillitis. Many team members have also undergone training to request imaging and prescribe medications, with their development supported by mentorship from ENT consultants and the outpatient team.

Key Responsibilities

A primary focus of this position is to enhance quality assurance measures that promote clinical independence while also leading educational initiatives for nursing staff through nurse-led training programs in collaboration with Consultant colleagues.

Core Duties Include:

  • Leading a specialized nursing service alongside the Nurse Practitioner Team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care.
  • Assuming overall responsibility for a designated caseload of patients requiring specialized nursing expertise, particularly in the emergency care setting.
  • Coordinating emergency care for ENT patients, including:
    • Rapid assessment and support for ENT patients in triage and emergency departments.
    • Developing and agreeing on appropriate care pathways in collaboration with the on-call ENT team.
    • Serving as a key contact for the surgical division's urgent care area.
    • Providing guidance and support to ward teams, including care planning.
    • Ensuring that care plans for acute ENT patients are executed effectively, including ordering tests and reviewing results during their emergency care.
    • Once trained, performing procedures such as treating epistaxis, otitis externa, and tonsillitis, along with other agreed-upon nurse-led interventions.
    • Regularly reviewing and updating nurse-led care packages, ensuring quality assurance in their implementation.
    • Delivering training for band 6 ENT clinical nurse practitioners.
    • Maintaining managerial oversight of the band 6 ENT clinical nurse practitioners.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • NMC registration.
  • A degree in nursing or a related health field.
  • Qualification in non-medical prescribing.

Desirable:

  • Master's degree.
  • Formal training in leadership and management.

Experience:

Essential:

  • Significant post-registration experience at Band 6 level.
  • Relevant clinical experience in an ENT or head and neck setting.
  • Experience in leadership and management roles.

Desirable:

  • Experience in ENT or related care settings.
  • Experience in establishing and developing new services.

  • Experience in writing audit or research reports for a multidisciplinary audience.

Planning and Organizational Skills:

Essential:

  • Ability to prioritize and manage personal workload while providing clinical leadership.
  • Capability to lead and implement changes to enhance patient services.
  • Understanding of national policies and current issues affecting ENT and head and neck patient management.

Desirable:

  • Evidence of leading local initiatives.
  • Demonstrated effective resource management.

Physical Skills:

Essential:

  • Current with all mandatory training.
  • Competent in manual handling techniques.

Desirable:

  • Flexibility in working hours as required by the clinical environment.
