£38,000 to £45,000 (commensurate with experience and qualifications)

About the Role:

This is a remarkable opportunity to become a vital member of Ark Schools' Regional Finance team, contributing to the financial management of the Birmingham Region.

As the Finance Operations Manager, you will play a crucial role in maintaining high standards of financial accuracy and compliance within the academies.

You will collaborate closely with the Regional Finance Director and engage with the relevant Principals and Operations Leads in the schools you support.

Your responsibilities will include overseeing the monthly financial operations for your designated schools, ensuring adherence to the Academies Financial Handbook, and partnering with senior staff to facilitate informed strategic decisions.

Additionally, you may provide assistance to other schools as directed by the Regional Finance Director.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure timely preparation and distribution of financial reports, cash flow forecasts, and necessary returns, including ad hoc reviews and projects.
  • Generate management accounts, perform related analyses, and prepare monthly financial reports for the Local Governing Body (LGB) and Finance Committee, including posting month-end journals and reconciling bank/control accounts.
  • Develop the annual budget and reforecasts for approval, collaborating with senior staff to ensure effective financial oversight and strategic decision-making.
  • Oversee the academy's accounting practices, ensuring compliance with all policies and procedures, including reviewing payment runs and payroll.
  • Supervise the finance support staff at the school, including organizing training, conducting inductions, and managing performance reviews.
  • Drive initiatives that promote financial regularity, propriety, value for money, and best practices across the region.
  • Ensure compliance with data protection regulations and procedures.

Key Requirements:
  • Qualified accountant (ACCA, CIMA, or ACA) or part-qualified with relevant experience.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Proven experience in managing effective administrative and financial systems, preferably within an educational context.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the broader MS Office suite.
  • Familiarity with financial databases and a willingness to learn new technologies.
  • Understanding of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures, with the ability to apply this knowledge effectively.
  • Professional integrity, resilience, and a resourceful, solution-oriented approach.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to delegate tasks effectively.
  • High standards and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Eagerness to learn and develop professional skills.
  • Sound judgment, particularly regarding confidentiality and discretion.
