Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Senior Clinical Practitioner (SCP) to deliver exceptional clinical services and assume leadership roles across our Urgent Care and Treatment Centres.

Key Responsibilities

Upon completion of the orientation phase, the SCP will engage in comprehensive clinical practice, focusing on independent advanced-level patient management for those presenting with minor injuries and illnesses. Collaboration with fellow SCPs, the Consultant Nurse, and the Head of Nursing will be essential in guiding the operations of the Urgent Care Centres.

The role includes overseeing the Emergency Practitioner team, managing schedules, and participating in recruitment and human resources functions.

Additionally, the SCP will play a vital role in educational initiatives, including teaching on internal courses related to minor injuries and providing mentorship to both internal and external learners.

Involvement in quality enhancement, service innovation, and audit activities will also be a significant aspect of this position, alongside opportunities for research engagement.

Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust operates two Urgent Care Centres, including a dedicated facility at Guys Hospital and another co-located with the Emergency Department at St Thomas'. Our teams consist of Emergency Practitioners, General Practitioners, and Registered Nurses, ensuring comprehensive care availability.

Our staffing structure includes a Consultant Nurse, a Lead SCP, a Physiotherapist SCP, and a diverse team of Emergency Practitioners and nursing staff, all committed to providing a supportive environment for both new and experienced professionals.

Detailed Responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

  • The SCP will autonomously manage a diverse patient caseload, ensuring high-quality assessment, diagnosis, and treatment within the Urgent Care Centres.
  • Prescribing medications will be a key component of this role.
  • Experience in urgent care is essential, with a demonstrated ability to apply advanced clinical reasoning and diagnostic skills.
  • The SCP will initiate and interpret diagnostic investigations, including imaging and laboratory tests.
  • Competence in clinical procedures such as wound closure, dislocation reduction, and plaster application is required.
  • Adherence to professional conduct standards and accountability for clinical decisions is expected.
  • Effective communication skills are necessary to engage patients and their families in care processes.
  • The SCP will utilize expertise to inform clinical decision-making and act as a resource for colleagues.

Leadership and Management:

  • Contribute to clinical governance and quality assurance initiatives, setting and monitoring practice standards.
  • Lead and mentor staff, providing guidance and performance management.
  • Collaborate with clinical leads and service managers to meet national healthcare objectives.
  • Influence clinical practices to enhance quality and promote best practices.
  • Engage in team leadership and manage complex situations effectively.

Education and Development:

  • Assess personal learning needs and develop a professional growth plan.
  • Participate in mentorship and performance reviews to demonstrate ongoing development.
  • Act as a role model and educator for staff, fostering a culture of learning.

Research and Quality Improvement:

  • Engage in research and quality improvement activities to enhance service delivery.
  • Evaluate clinical practices and disseminate findings to inform future practices.

Person Specification

Professional Registration:

  • Registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional.

Qualifications:

  • Postgraduate Diploma or Master's degree in Advanced Clinical Practice or equivalent.
  • Independent prescribing qualification.
  • Evidence of recent academic engagement.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two years in an advanced practice role within urgent care.
  • Demonstrated experience in staff management and education.
