Job Title: Band 5 or 6 Orthoptist
Department: Orthoptic Department
Location: Northampton General Hospital
Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Orthoptist to join our team in the Orthoptic Department at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a comprehensive quality Orthoptic service to patients referred to the department.
Key Responsibilities- Assessment and Diagnosis: To assess and diagnose new patients and develop and manage a specialized treatment package appropriate to the needs of the individual patient, adhering to national and local guidelines.
- Visual Field Testing: To carry out appropriate visual field testing on patients referred by the Ophthalmologists, Neurologists, and other medical practitioners within the hospital, and to provide feedback and where required, a summary of the results obtained.
- Glaucoma Monitoring: To carry out HRT II (Heidelberg Retinal Topography) visual field testing, OCTs, and measure IOPs as part of the glaucoma monitoring service.
- CPD and Training: To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of techniques and technology and to attend appropriate training as part of our CPD (continuing professional development) and to be responsible for maintaining your own CPD folder.
- Workload Management: To be responsible for managing and incorporating any unplanned workload in such a way as to minimize inconvenience to patients and maximize the smooth running of the Orthoptic and eye clinics.
- Surgical Options: To discuss surgical options with the surgeon.
- Surgical Risks: To identify surgical risks (pre, and post surgery) and to discuss these with the patients (parents/carers) and surgeon.
- Internal Cover: To assist and provide internal cover for colleagues during periods of annual leave, sickness, and vacancies.
- Communication: To tactfully explain the details of the medical condition which may be highly complex.
Education, Training, and Qualifications:
- Educated to Degree Level: Educated to degree level or equivalent level in orthoptics.
- Self-Motivation and Analytical Skills: Must be self-motivated and have the ability to analyze clinical data and formulate management plans.
- Physical Ability: Crawling on the floor to assess young children.
