Senior Pediatric Eye Specialist

Overview of the Position

This role is designed to enhance our extensive and specialized pediatric eye care unit. The ideal candidate will be responsible for delivering a thorough ophthalmic service and contributing to a cohesive county-wide initiative, ensuring high-quality care across multiple locations. The successful applicant will play a pivotal role in the advancement and management of this service while collaborating with the broader ophthalmology team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver a comprehensive ophthalmic service and support the effective operation of a county-wide pediatric eye care program.
  • Possess a valid driving license and access to a reliable vehicle for service delivery.
  • Provide specialized pediatric ophthalmology services while also being proficient in general ophthalmology practices.
  • Demonstrate expertise in cataract surgery and a commitment to ongoing training and development.
  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call system for pediatric cases, primarily through phone, text, or email communication during standard working hours.
  • Assume responsibility for patient care and the operational integrity of the department.
  • Engage in educational responsibilities, contributing to the Postgraduate Medical Education program and mentoring ophthalmic trainees.
  • Facilitate the training of nursing staff and other healthcare professionals within the department and across the Trust.
  • Actively participate in departmental educational meetings and contribute to the clinical audit program, including regional and national audits.
  • Report critical incidents and engage in departmental audit and clinical governance meetings.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to service enhancement and innovation to generate revenue for the Trust.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • FRCOph or an equivalent qualification.
  • Completion of specialty training or within six months of the anticipated completion date.

Desirable

  • Higher academic qualifications such as an MD or PhD.

Teaching and Audit Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience in clinical audit.
  • Evidence of teaching junior medical staff.

Research and Academic Contributions

Desirable

  • A specialized interest that complements the existing expertise within the department.
  • Publications in recognized medical journals.

Interpersonal Skills

Essential

  • Proven leadership capabilities.
