Job Description

Job Title: Orthoptist Specialist - Band 5 or 6

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Orthoptist Specialist to join our team at Northampton General Hospital. As an Orthoptist Specialist, you will be responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and managing patients referred to the orthoptic department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and diagnose patients with a range of conditions, including children and adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, neurological, maxilla-facial, and endocrine problems.
  • Develop and manage specialized treatment packages for individual patients, adhering to national and local guidelines.
  • Assess patients with TB, HIV, and AIDS referred for visual field testing.
  • Provide motivational support for patients and parents undergoing prolonged and difficult treatments.
  • Carry out visual field testing, OCTs, and measure IOPs as part of the glaucoma monitoring service.
  • Participate in clinical audit and maintain up-to-date knowledge of techniques and technology.
  • Manage and incorporate any unplanned workload to minimize inconvenience to patients and maximize the smooth running of the Orthoptic and eye clinics.
  • Discuss surgical options with the surgeon and assist in post-operative adjustable suture techniques.
  • Identify surgical risks and discuss these with patients and the surgeon.
  • Assess patients post-operative outcomes and modify treatment accordingly.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and assist and provide internal cover for colleagues during periods of annual leave, sickness, and vacancies.
  • Utilize a range of verbal and non-verbal mechanisms in the assessment and communication of treatment plans to patients and parents.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of techniques and technology.
