Position Overview

We are seeking applications for the role of Research Software Engineer. This position demands proficient programming skills and a solid understanding of social network structural characteristics. The successful candidate will collaborate within a focused team, funded by the MRC, to create algorithms aimed at generating synthetic social networks for simulation purposes. The project is spearheaded by a principal investigator.

This initiative aims to devise methods for constructing more realistic synthetic social networks that replicate essential structural properties observed in genuine social networks, such as mutual friendships. Simulations have proven invaluable in guiding policy decisions, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, by balancing public health measures with economic considerations.

Key Responsibilities:

Service Delivery and Development

• Uphold the principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion, aligning with the University's core values.

• Provide expert advice and guidance in your area of specialization, particularly in research and coding, adhering to University policies and regulations.

• Design, develop, and implement high-performance algorithms for synthetic social network generation.

• Integrate these algorithms with open-source network software, ensuring comprehensive documentation.

• Contribute to high-quality outputs, including research papers for peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences.

• Proactively address challenges that may hinder research objectives by collaborating with the principal investigator to devise innovative solutions.

• Continuously assess and enhance service delivery, seeking opportunities for improvement.

• Provide specialized knowledge and support in interpreting and analyzing complex data.

• Manage your research and software development activities while contributing to the overall project planning.

• Engage in both individual and collaborative research projects under the guidance of the principal investigator.

Communication and Collaboration

• Utilize your expertise to lead and participate in relevant meetings and working groups.

• Collaborate with internal and external academics, industry professionals, and technical specialists to support teaching and research initiatives.

• Foster positive relationships with stakeholders, providing training and guidance as needed.

• Contribute to promotional events and presentations at conferences.

• Undertake any other reasonable duties as required.
