Position Overview

We are pleased to present a remarkable opportunity for a Senior Pediatric Consultant with a specialization in Rheumatology at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust.

In this role, you will not only deliver exceptional pediatric care but also collaborate with experienced colleagues to influence the future direction of pediatric services. You will share accountability for the operational efficiency, clinical excellence, and resource allocation of the department.

Key Responsibilities

The position is structured as an 8 PA contract, with the potential for additional PAs based on future job planning. The role includes a 1:8 on-call duty for general pediatrics and an out-of-hours emergency service (non-resident rota), shared with fellow Consultants in the department, for which an on-call availability supplement is provided.

You will oversee the ongoing care and treatment of your patients and fulfill clinical responsibilities as outlined in your job plan.

Candidates applying for permanent Consultant positions must be on the GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of their CCT date (or equivalent) at the time of the interview.

Job Duties

You will be expected to provide expert opinions and take full responsibility for the clinical care of patients across a broad range of pediatric conditions.

A commitment to teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students is essential.

An interest or experience in Pediatric Rheumatology is highly desirable.

You will also supervise Foundation Year 1, Foundation Year 2, and Specialty Trainees.

The ability to teach clinical skills effectively is crucial.

Candidate Requirements

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS/MBChB or equivalent qualification.
  • Full GMC Registration with a License to practice at the time of application.
  • Full Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).
  • CCT or within six months of obtaining CCT at the time of the interview or entry onto the GMC Specialist Register by the time of the interview or equivalent.
  • APLS provider certification.
  • Training in Child Protection/Safeguarding (Minimum Level 3).

Desirable

  • APLS/instructor qualification.
  • Interest or experience in Pediatric Rheumatology.

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Strong clinical skills and expertise in Pediatrics.
  • Comprehensive technical competence in Pediatric care.
  • Experience in making clinical decisions and prioritizing patient needs.
  • Ability to take supervised responsibility for the clinical care of patients with both acute and chronic conditions.
  • Evidence of effective collaboration within a multidisciplinary team and shared clinical responsibilities.

Management & Administrative Experience

Essential

  • Ability to organize and manage outpatient priorities effectively.
  • Evidence of active participation in clinical audits.
  • Willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance frameworks and targets.
  • Clear understanding of current priorities in Pediatrics.

Teaching Experience

Essential

  • Experience in teaching undergraduate students.
  • Ability to teach clinical skills.
  • Capacity to innovate and develop new technologies/methods where appropriate.

Desirable

  • Qualification in medical education.

Research Experience

Essential

  • Ability to apply research findings to clinical challenges.

Desirable

  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
