Position Overview

The Credit Ratings Analyst will collaborate with senior analysts in assigning and overseeing credit ratings; conducting research, drafting, and disseminating reports; and engaging in various related activities. This role involves assessing credit risk by synthesizing inputs from both internal and external sources. In performing credit evaluations for assigned entities, transactions, or reviews, the Credit Ratings Analyst is expected to engage in discussions during rating committees and interact with issuers and other market participants, working closely with senior analysts.

The Credit Ratings Analyst position is crucial to Moody's commitment to ratings precision, research integrity, and market engagement. Typically, this role will concentrate on a specific rating sector, with opportunities for cross-training and involvement in other rating sectors.

Key Responsibilities

Portfolio Management & Credit Quality
Collaborating with senior analysts to conduct daily credit assessments related to ratings, research, presentations, and investor relations. Key analytical tasks may include:

  • Analyzing financial documents and charts, interpreting data and financial statements, constructing and updating financial forecasts, and composing analytical commentary in line with Moody's methodologies.
  • Assisting with proprietary models and new financial projections as necessary, identifying data trends, and applying analytical skills to formulate sound credit judgments.
  • Gaining a foundational understanding of credit principles through reviewing components such as transaction documentation, cash flow analysis, or loss allocation guidelines.
  • Executing analytical tasks related to portfolio assessments and other credit initiatives.
  • Acquiring a working knowledge of Moody's methodologies and credit rating best practices, applying these with guidance from senior analysts.
  • Collaborating with senior analysts to draft initial versions of rating committee memoranda.
  • Developing the capability to recognize and analyze key factors influencing issuer credit ratings. Evaluating and interpreting financial data and other credit inputs from various sources.
  • Monitoring credit quality and trends within issuers and industries by tracking market developments and relevant news, analyzing issuer reports, and engaging with issuers for further clarification and information.
  • Participating in rating committee meetings, providing analysis and insights as appropriate. Preparing credit estimates to assess elements of credit risk in certain rated transactions.

Research, Investor Relations & Market Engagement

  • Contributing to the initial drafts of core research documents (such as credit opinions, issuer and sector analyses, press releases, pre-sale, and new issue reports) in collaboration with senior analysts.
  • Assisting in the development of research strategies, including idea generation and preliminary drafting, while adhering to Moody's research standards.
  • Attending investor briefings and issuer meetings as required; aiding in the preparation of presentation materials when necessary; arriving prepared to engage in discussions.
  • Building positive relationships with issuers, demonstrating initiative to understand their business and proactively addressing issuer inquiries.

Credit Administration

  • Utilizing relevant ratings and research systems and software specific to the rating sector.
  • Demonstrating a solid understanding and judgment in applying Moody's processes, documentation standards, and best practices, while adhering to all relevant laws and policies.

Coaching & Guidance

  • Providing guidance in delegating tasks to the data processing team.
  • Actively managing workload to ensure timely completion of tasks. Seeking guidance from management as needed to prioritize work effectively.
  • Offering feedback to management regarding the quality and accuracy of work produced by the data processing team, while providing constructive and proactive insights.

Risk Identification and Management

  • Ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures to certify relevant key codes as required. Completing mandatory training in a timely manner.
  • Being aware of Moody's risk management approach.
  • Increasing awareness of cyber risks and mitigating vulnerabilities (e.g., phishing and malware).
  • Ensuring high-quality work that is free of errors.

Qualifications

Experience/Qualifications

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent qualification with strong academic performance.
  • Relevant experience in the Insurance sector (including internships). A strong understanding of the Insurance industry and its key drivers is essential.
  • Accounting knowledge with a focus on financial analysis is preferred.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development (e.g., CFA, ACCA, FRM).
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Familiarity with relevant programming languages (e.g., Python/SQL) is advantageous.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Organized and efficient, with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Proactive and capable of working effectively in a collaborative team environment.

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English is essential. Additional language skills (French, German, Spanish) would be advantageous.
