Position Overview

The Credit Ratings Analyst will collaborate with senior analysts in the assessment and oversight of credit ratings; conducting research, drafting reports, and engaging in various related tasks. This role involves evaluating credit risk by synthesizing inputs from both internal and external sources. In performing credit evaluations for assigned credits, transactions, or reviews, the Credit Ratings Analyst is expected to engage in discussions during rating committee meetings and interact with issuers and other market stakeholders, in conjunction with senior analysts.

The Credit Ratings Analyst position is vital to Moody's commitment to ratings precision, research excellence, and market engagement. Typically, this role will concentrate on a specific rating group, with opportunities for cross-training and collaboration with other groups.

Key Responsibilities

Credit Portfolio Management & Quality Assurance
Collaborating with senior analysts by executing daily credit evaluations related to ratings, research, presentations, and stakeholder engagement. Examples of analytical tasks may include:

  • Analyzing financial documents and metrics, interpreting data and financial statements, developing and revising financial forecasts, and composing analytical insights in line with Moody's methodologies.
  • Assisting with proprietary models and new financial projections as necessary, identifying data trends, and applying analytical skills to derive sound credit judgments.
  • Gaining a foundational understanding of credit principles through reviewing components such as transaction documentation, cash flow assessments, or loss allocation frameworks.
  • Conducting analytical tasks associated with portfolio assessments and other credit initiatives.
  • Acquiring a comprehensive understanding of Moody's methodologies and credit rating best practices, applying these with guidance from senior analysts.
  • Collaborating with senior analysts to draft initial versions of rating committee memos.
  • Developing the ability to recognize and analyze key factors influencing issuer credit ratings, interpreting financial data and other credit inputs from various sources.
  • Monitoring credit quality and industry trends by tracking market developments and relevant news, analyzing issuer reports, and engaging with issuers for further clarification.
  • Participating in rating committee meetings, contributing analysis and insights as appropriate, and preparing credit estimates to evaluate elements of credit risk in rated transactions.

Research, Stakeholder Engagement & Market Interaction

  • Contributing to the initial drafts of essential research (such as credit opinions, issuer and sector analyses, press releases, and new issue reports) in collaboration with senior analysts.
  • Participating in research strategy, including idea generation and preliminary drafting, while adhering to Moody's research standards.
  • Attending investor briefings and issuer meetings as necessary; assisting in the preparation of presentation materials; arriving ready to engage in discussions.
  • Building constructive relationships with issuers, demonstrating initiative to understand their business and proactively addressing inquiries.

Credit Administration

  • Utilizing relevant ratings and research systems and software specific to the rating group.
  • Demonstrating a solid understanding of Moody's processes, documentation standards, and best practices, while complying with all regulations and policies.

Coaching & Oversight

  • Providing guidance in delegating tasks to the data processing team.
  • Effectively managing workload to ensure timely completion of tasks, seeking guidance from management as needed to prioritize work.
  • Offering feedback to management regarding the quality and accuracy of work produced by the data processing team, while providing constructive and proactive insights.

Risk Management and Compliance

  • Ensuring adherence to applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures to certify relevant key codes as required. Completing mandatory training in a timely manner.
  • Maintaining awareness of Moody's risk management approach.
  • Enhancing awareness of cyber risks and strategies to mitigate vulnerabilities.
  • Ensuring high-quality work that is free from errors.

Qualifications

Experience/Qualifications

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent qualification with strong academic performance.
  • Relevant experience in the Insurance sector (including internships). A strong understanding of the Insurance industry and its key drivers is essential.
  • Knowledge of accounting with an emphasis on financial analysis is preferred.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development (e.g., CFA, ACCA, FRM).
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Familiarity with relevant programming languages (e.g., Python/SQL) is advantageous.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Organized and efficient, with a keen attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Proactive and capable of working effectively in a collaborative team environment.

Language Proficiency

  • Fluency in English is essential. Additional language skills (French, German, Spanish) would be beneficial.
