The Podiatry Service at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals comprises three specialized teams: Empowerment (Triage and First Contact), Community Podiatry (Foot Protection Service, At-Risk Foot Team, Nail Surgery Team, Rheumatology Podiatry), and the Acute Team (Diabetic Foot Multidisciplinary Team, Vascular Podiatry, Renal Podiatry, F-Scan and Offloading Clinics). You will have the chance to enhance your skills and rotate through these specialized services.

You will assist the Podiatry Service in upholding its Customer Service Excellence award, which has been maintained for 28 years, while actively promoting the Trust's PROUD values.

Key Responsibilities

You will deliver evidence-based, high-quality care and treatment to a diverse and complex caseload of patients suffering from metabolic, vascular, and neurological disorders, which will include:

  • Routine care for High Risk and At-Risk patients,
  • Management of wounds and ulcerations, including sharp debridement, offloading, and assessments of neurological and vascular conditions.
  • Performing Nail Surgery.

As an Advanced Podiatry Specialist, you will:

  • Evaluate, diagnose, plan, and create specialized podiatric treatment strategies for individuals with various health conditions in a community environment, both in clinics and at patients' residences.
  • Manage a caseload of community patients with intricate needs utilizing specialized skills and evidence-based, patient-centered approaches.
  • Utilize Patient Group Directives and your Prescription Only Medicine qualification (if obtained).
  • Refer and monitor additional investigations and treatments, including imaging, vascular assessments, antibiotics, and laboratory tests.
  • Mentor and train less experienced Podiatrists, Assistants, Students, and Apprentices within the Podiatry Service.
  • Contribute to service development, audits, and clinical research initiatives.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential

  • Registration with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Podiatrist
  • BSc (Hons) in Podiatry or an equivalent qualification

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualifications or MSc level studies relevant to the position
  • Evidence of training in a specialized area (e.g., Vascular, Casting)
  • Prescription Only Medicines (POM-A, POM-S)

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to produce clear, accurate, and timely patient records and correspondence
  • Capacity to provide high levels of podiatric care independently
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development
  • Understanding of the podiatrist's role within the NHS and familiarity with Primary Care
  • Awareness of NICE guidelines specific to diabetic foot care
  • Understanding of clinical research and evidence-based practices in Podiatry
  • Proficiency in computer usage
  • Valid UK driving license and access to a vehicle with the ability to obtain business insurance

Desirable

  • Familiarity with SystmOne or other patient record systems

  • Relevant NHS Podiatry experience
  • Experience treating patients with Diabetes, Vascular Disease, and other at-risk conditions

Desirable

  • Experience in performing Nail Surgery
