Specialist in Chronic Pain Management and Anaesthesia
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Specialist in Chronic Pain Management and Anaesthesia to deliver exceptional care and outstanding service. The ideal candidate will be committed to upholding the highest standards in patient treatment and will share our vision to enhance the Pain services at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.
This role offers a unique opportunity for the successful candidate to implement innovative ideas and contribute to the expansion of chronic pain services. The position includes responsibilities in outpatient clinics and pain management theatres, as well as participation in elective surgical procedures and on-call duties.
The planned activities will consist of direct clinical care (DCC), supporting professional activities (SPA), and on-call responsibilities. The job plan, detailed in the accompanying documentation, illustrates a typical week at our Trust.
While the weekly schedule may undergo slight adjustments, the core structure of DCC and SPA will remain consistent.
The appointee will be part of a consultant on-call rota (1 in 9) for emergency surgical cases.
Main Responsibilities
- Maintain the highest clinical standards in managing patients under your care.
- Collaborate with colleagues to ensure the efficient operation of Acute and Chronic Pain services within our Trust.
- Engage in teaching, auditing, management, and clinical governance activities.
- Actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD).

Job Responsibilities
The post-holder will:
- Uphold the highest clinical standards in patient management.
- Promote innovative working methods and coordinate patient care in both hospital and community settings, ensuring services are based on effective partnerships across the health community.
- Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and meetings.
- Collaborate with the multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines in close cooperation with the clinical lead.
- Establish and maintain effective working practices within wards, outpatient services, and emergency departments.
- Foster strong working relationships with colleagues in tertiary centers, community services, and primary care.
- Provide support and leadership to junior medical staff, nursing colleagues, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Share responsibility with colleagues for the daily management of patients.
- Actively engage in departmental and Trust matters related to Clinical Governance and Audit.
Clinical Responsibilities
The key duties and responsibilities include:
- Specialist Clinics
- Outpatient consultations
- Surgical procedures as per specialty
- Teaching and training
- Care for inpatients or outpatients
- Clinical and administrative tasks as required
- Teaching, training, and supervision of junior staff and undergraduates
- Involvement in the appraisal and assessment of junior staff
- Participation in Clinical Governance initiatives
- Engagement in teaching, research, and administrative duties
Clinical Governance
The post-holder will:
- Adhere to the Trust's Clinical Governance policy, including clinical risk management, data collection, and regular departmental audit projects.
Envisaged Job Plan
The job plan is anticipated to consist of 7 Programmed Activities (PAs), with specific details to be agreed upon with the successful candidate following their appointment.
The appointee will be expected to undertake:
- Outpatient clinics
- Commitment to various care pathways
- Ward referrals
- Participation in the Consultant On-Call rota
- Attendance at Pain multidisciplinary meetings
- Involvement in additional multidisciplinary meetings within the MSK Directorate
- Theatre lists
