Job Overview
Organizational Background
The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) oversees the security measures related to civil nuclear materials and sensitive nuclear information within the United Kingdom. Our regulatory framework is built upon outcome-oriented Security Assessment Principles, in alignment with the Nuclear Industries Security Regulations 2003. ONR is dedicated to fostering the advancement of best practices in nuclear security, both on a national and international scale.
Additionally, ONR is responsible for the regulation of the transportation of nuclear and radioactive materials via various modes, including road, rail, air, and inland waterways. As of January 2021, we also manage the UK's State System of Accountancy for and Control of Nuclear Materials (SSAC) alongside a domestic safeguards regime.

Role Purpose and Key Responsibilities
The Cyber Security & Information Assurance Inspector plays a crucial role in enforcing security regulations across the civil nuclear sector, ensuring that organizations effectively manage cyber security and information risks. Key responsibilities include:
- Evaluating duty holders' cyber security frameworks to ensure risks are managed appropriately.
- Conducting regulatory inspections with duty holders to verify the implementation of technical cyber security measures aimed at safeguarding information technology, operational technology, and sensitive nuclear data.
- Inspecting facilities throughout the nuclear supply chain to confirm that information security risks are effectively addressed.
- Contributing to the formulation of regulatory policies and promoting best practices both domestically and internationally.
- Collaborating with other regulatory bodies and various government security and intelligence agencies, coordinating responses to significant cyber security incidents.
- Representing ONR at security-related events and meetings organized by international and national organizations.
Continuous training will be provided to enhance knowledge and expertise in nuclear, cyber security, information assurance, and regulatory matters throughout the successful candidate's career. Opportunities for advancement and promotion will be available as experience in nuclear security regulation grows.
Management Responsibilities
- Currently, there are no direct line management responsibilities; however, future expectations may include managing staff and mentoring graduate and apprentice employees.
Location and Travel Requirements
This position can be based at any ONR office location. The role may involve travel, including overnight stays primarily within the UK and occasionally abroad.
ONR supports hybrid working arrangements, balancing office presence with remote work to foster collaboration while considering individual preferences and well-being.
A valid driving license is required for this position.
Security Clearance Requirements
The successful candidate must obtain and maintain National Security Vetting clearance at SC level.
