About the Role:
We are seeking a dedicated and patient individual to support a person with a visual impairment in learning to read. As a Reader Volunteer, you will play a vital role in helping this individual develop their literacy skills and build their confidence.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide one-to-one reading support to the person we support, using a variety of materials and resources.
- Develop a supportive and non-judgmental relationship with the person we support, promoting a sense of trust and rapport.
- Work collaboratively with the person we support to set and achieve reading goals, celebrating progress and successes along the way.
- Be punctual and reliable, ensuring that the person we support receives consistent and high-quality support.
- Be kind, empathetic, and patient, adapting your approach to meet the individual's needs and preferences.
- Be able to deal with confidential information in line with our data protection procedures.
- Be able to assist with sighted guide/orientation as needed.
Requirements:
- A passion for reading and a willingness to support others in developing their literacy skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with the person we support.
- Patience, empathy, and understanding, with the ability to adapt to the individual's needs and preferences.
- Reliability and punctuality, with the ability to commit to regular sessions.
- Able to work in a team environment and contribute to the overall success of the service.
