Overview

The Francis Crick Institute is a collaborative entity involving prominent organizations such as the Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, and several leading universities. As a registered charity, our mission is to advance biomedical research that enhances human health and addresses diseases.

The institute stands as a premier center for biomedical research and innovation, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, academic institutions, healthcare entities, and industry partners. With a commitment to research excellence, the Crick Institute is equipped to tackle significant scientific challenges affecting health and disease. Our state-of-the-art facility in central London accommodates approximately 1,250 researchers and 250 support personnel.

The Biological Research Facility (BRF) is designed to facilitate cutting-edge scientific research involving various animal models, including rodents and amphibians. The BRF prioritizes both scientific inquiry and animal welfare, promoting a collaborative environment within and beyond the institute. Our facility provides expert support for housing and experimentation, adhering to the highest welfare standards.

Operating under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, the BRF employs a multi-tiered licensing system to ensure ethical and justified use of animals in research. Named individuals are legally accountable for compliance with these regulations, reporting to the Home Office.

Department

This position is situated within the Surgical Services Core, which is part of the Experimental Operations and Education and Training teams. The BRF assists researchers by offering expertise and training in all aspects of animal research, with a strong emphasis on welfare and the principles of the 3Rs: reduction, refinement, and replacement of animal use in research.

The Surgical Services team is responsible for providing guidance and training on best practices in various surgical techniques, collaborating closely with the Named Veterinary Surgeon and Named Training and Competency Officers. Additionally, the role includes offering surgical support and executing surgical techniques to ensure optimal animal welfare and reliable scientific outcomes.

The Surgical Research Specialist will report to the Surgical Services Core Lead and work in conjunction with the veterinary and training teams to deliver and enhance surgical services for the research community. • Collaborating with the Surgical Services Core Lead to manage daily operations, including scheduling, record-keeping, and process improvement, while maintaining strong client relationships.
  • Training and supervising team members and researchers in best practices for surgical techniques, aiming to exceed service goals and operate within a culture of innovation and collaboration.
  • Maintaining accurate records for compliance and communication, ensuring adherence to legal frameworks in all scientific work.
  • Reporting on work outcomes and collaborating with the team to address challenges and implement improvements.
  • Developing extensive knowledge across all aspects of surgical services to enhance techniques and protocols, focusing on animal welfare and scientific integrity.
  • Assisting with additional tasks as requested by leadership, contributing to the overall operations of the BRF to ensure continuity and welfare standards.
