The Biological Research Facility (BRF) is integral to our scientific endeavors, facilitating cutting-edge research involving various animal models. The BRF is dedicated to both scientific advancement and animal welfare, promoting collaboration within the institute and beyond. Our operations adhere to the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, ensuring ethical practices and compliance with legal standards.

Department Overview

This position resides within the Surgical Services Core, part of the Experimental Operations and Education and Training teams. The BRF provides essential expertise and training in animal research, emphasizing welfare and the principles of the 3Rs: reduction, refinement, and replacement of animal use in research.

The Surgical Services team is tasked with offering guidance and training on optimal surgical practices, working closely with the Named Veterinary Surgeon and Named Training and Competency Officers. The role involves providing surgical support and executing surgical techniques to enhance animal welfare and ensure the reliability of scientific outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Engaging in all facets of the Surgical service, with opportunities to specialize in key techniques. Collaborating with team members and the broader BRF to deliver specialized services that bolster scientific research. This includes participating in essential out-of-hours duties and maintaining surgical facilities and supplies.
  • Assisting in the daily management and delivery of the service, including scheduling, record-keeping, and enhancing operational procedures while fostering positive relationships with clients.
  • Training and supervising team members and researchers in best surgical practices, striving to meet and exceed service objectives while adhering to established protocols.
  • Maintaining accurate records for compliance and communication, ensuring adherence to legal frameworks in all scientific work.
  • Collaborating with the team to report on outcomes, address challenges, and implement improvements.
  • Building a comprehensive knowledge base to refine techniques and protocols, prioritizing animal welfare and scientific integrity.
  • Executing additional reasonable requests from leadership to support the BRF's operations and ensure continuity of care.
Qualifications and Competencies

This role is technical in nature, and while a scientific background is not mandatory, candidates should exemplify the core values of the Crick Institute: Bold, Imaginative, Open, Dynamic, and Collegiate.

Essential Qualifications
  • Possession of relevant qualifications, such as:
    • Registered Veterinary Nurse
    • Personal Licence Holder under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, Category C
  • Experience in performing small animal surgeries under general anesthesia.
  • Familiarity with microscopy and surgical equipment.
  • Proficiency in conducting aseptic procedures.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team and maintain a flexible approach.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and capacity to maintain accurate records.
  • Willingness to engage with animal models and understanding of relevant legislation.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Further qualifications in a relevant field.
