The Biological Research Facility (BRF) is a cutting-edge establishment that facilitates top-tier scientific research involving various animal models. The BRF is committed to both scientific advancement and animal welfare, promoting collaboration within the institute and beyond. It provides expert support for housing and experimentation, adhering to the highest standards of animal care.
The BRF operates under stringent regulations, ensuring ethical practices in the use of animals for research. A comprehensive licensing system governs the responsible use of animals, emphasizing the importance of justification, ethical review, and humane treatment.
Department Overview
This position is situated within the Surgical Services Core, which collaborates closely with the Experimental Operations and Education and Training teams. The BRF offers guidance and training in all facets of animal research, emphasizing welfare and the principles of the 3Rs: reduction, refinement, and replacement of animal use in research.
The Surgical Services team is tasked with providing expert advice and training on best practices in various surgical techniques, working alongside the Named Veterinary Surgeon (NVS) and Named Training and Competency Officers (NTCOs). The role involves delivering surgical support and executing surgical techniques that align with scientific objectives, ensuring optimal animal welfare and reliable research outcomes.
The Surgical Research Scientist will report to the Surgical Services Core Lead and collaborate closely with NVSs and NTCOs to fulfill their responsibilities. This includes managing, delivering, and developing surgical services for the research community at the Crick, while also engaging with other scientists and staff across the institute.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Engaging in all aspects of the Surgical service, specializing in key surgical skills, and assisting team members to deliver specialized services that support scientific research.
- Collaborating with the Surgical Services Core Lead to manage daily operations, maintain records, troubleshoot issues, and enhance procedures while fostering strong client relationships.
- Training and supervising team members and researchers in best practices for surgical techniques, striving to achieve service goals and adhere to established protocols.
- Maintaining accurate records for compliance and communication, ensuring that all scientific work is conducted efficiently and within legal frameworks.
- Reporting on work outcomes and collaborating with the team to address challenges and implement improvements.
- Developing a comprehensive knowledge base to enhance techniques and protocols, focusing on animal welfare and scientific outcomes.
- Executing additional tasks as requested by the Surgical Services Core Lead and other senior staff to ensure operational continuity and animal welfare.
This technical role does not require a specific scientific background. Candidates should embody the core values of The Francis Crick Institute: Bold, Imaginative, Open, Dynamic, and Collegiate.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Possession of relevant qualifications such as Registered Veterinary Nurse or Personal Licence Holder under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, Category C.
- Experience in performing small animal surgeries and procedures under general anesthesia.
- Familiarity with microscopy and surgical/micromanipulation equipment.
- Proficiency in conducting aseptic procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team and maintain a flexible, cooperative approach.
- Experience in customer service and independent problem-solving.
- Willingness to work with animal models and knowledge of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.
- Further qualifications, preferably in a relevant scientific discipline.
- Experience in providing training in surgical procedures and assessing competency.
- Ability to quickly learn and confidently perform technical tasks.
- Patience and composure in high-pressure situations.
- Strong hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
- Excellent organizational and record-keeping abilities.
- Capability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines effectively.
- Proficiency in Microsoft software and good communication skills.
