Overview

The Francis Crick Institute is a collaborative entity formed by leading organizations including the Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, and several prestigious universities. As a registered charity, its mission is to advance biomedical research addressing various facets of human health and disease.

The institute stands as a premier center for biomedical research and innovation, fostering collaboration among researchers, academic institutions, healthcare organizations, and industry. With a commitment to research excellence, it aims to tackle significant scientific challenges related to health and disease. The Crick is situated in a state-of-the-art research facility in central London, accommodating approximately 1,250 researchers and 250 support personnel.

The Biological Research Facility (BRF) is equipped to facilitate cutting-edge scientific research involving various animal models. The BRF is dedicated to both scientific advancement and animal welfare, promoting collaboration within the institute and beyond. It provides essential expertise and support for animal housing and experimentation, adhering to the highest welfare standards.

Operating under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, the BRF ensures the ethical use of animals in research through a comprehensive licensing system. A designated team is responsible for maintaining compliance with legal standards and reporting to regulatory authorities.

Department

This position is situated within the Surgical Services Core, which collaborates with the Experimental Operations and Education and Training teams. The BRF offers expertise and training in all aspects of animal research, emphasizing welfare and the principles of the 3Rs: reduction, refinement, and replacement of animal use in research.

The Surgical Services team is tasked with providing guidance and training on best practices in various surgical techniques, working alongside the Named Veterinary Surgeon and Named Training and Competency Officers. The role involves delivering surgical support and executing surgical techniques to enhance animal welfare and ensure the reliability of scientific research outcomes.

The Surgical Research Scientist will report to the Surgical Services Core Lead and collaborate closely with veterinary and training staff to fulfill their responsibilities. This includes managing, delivering, and developing surgical services for the research community.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Engaging in all aspects of the Surgical service while specializing in key surgical skills. Collaborating with team members and the broader BRF to provide specialized services that support scientific research.
  • Assisting in the daily management and provision of surgical services, including scheduling, record-keeping, and enhancing procedures while fostering positive client relationships.
  • Training and supervising team members and researchers in best practices for surgical techniques, striving to meet service goals and operating within a culture of innovation and collaboration.
  • Maintaining accurate records for compliance and communication, ensuring adherence to legal frameworks in all scientific work.
  • Reporting on work outcomes and collaborating with the team to address challenges and implement improvements.
  • Developing a comprehensive knowledge base to enhance techniques and protocols, focusing on optimizing animal welfare and scientific results.
  • Responding to reasonable requests from leadership and contributing to the overall operations of the BRF to ensure business continuity and animal welfare.
Qualifications and Competencies

This role requires a technical background, though a specific scientific degree is not mandatory. Candidates should exemplify the core values of The Francis Crick Institute: Bold, Imaginative, Open, Dynamic, and Collegiate.

Essential Qualifications and Experience
  • Possession of relevant qualifications, such as:
    • Registered Veterinary Nurse
    • Personal Licence Holder under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, Category C
  • Experience in performing small animal surgeries and procedures under general anesthesia.
  • Familiarity with microscopy and surgical equipment.
  • Proficiency in conducting aseptic procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team and maintain a flexible approach.
  • Experience in customer service and independent problem-solving.
  • Willingness to work with animal models and knowledge of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • Further qualifications, preferably in a relevant field.
  • Experience in training others in surgical procedures.
  • Experience in assessing competency in surgical techniques.
