Consultant Cardiologist in Acute Care and Heart Failure Management
4 weeks ago
We invite qualified candidates to consider a position within our esteemed Cardiology department at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The selected individual will engage in activities within the Acute Assessment Unit and associated wards, including the Emergency Department. A keen interest in heart failure and imaging is essential. The successful candidate will collaborate with our dedicated team of specialist nurses and consultants, as well as support our subspecialty divisions.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe appointee will collaborate with the cardiology consultant team to deliver an exceptional cardiology service for patients, healthcare providers, and colleagues.
This role is designed to address the growing demands in cardiology, with a focus on acute care, while working closely with specialist nursing staff and fellow consultants in the Heart Failure service.
The post holder will be an integral part of the cardiology department, maintaining close communication with colleagues in the Emergency Department and Acute Medicine. The successful candidate will also oversee the operation of cardiac clinics, with no obligations to cardiology wards or general medical on-call duties.
Position OverviewRole Duties
The successful candidate for this clinical role will primarily operate at the designated hospital site. They will work alongside the cardiology consultant team to ensure a high-quality cardiology service for patients, local general practitioners, and hospital staff. In-patient cardiology services are centralized at the acute facility. Patients with primary cardiology issues will be admitted under the direct supervision of the cardiology team. The appointee is expected to work autonomously and in close partnership with colleagues in the Acute Assessment Unit, Emergency Department, and Ambulatory care to enhance and develop the frontline service within the organization. It is anticipated that the post holder will also provide outpatient hot clinics during the week to facilitate early discharges and urgent referrals. One of these clinics may be located at a satellite facility.
The role includes dedicated time for frontline care, encompassing AAU and Emergency Department post-take and ward rounds, as well as support for our Virtual Heart Failure ward. Time will also be allocated for triaging A&E discharges into clinics through the electronic Urgent Care Review initiative (currently in development). The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to this evolving project, and in alignment with cardiology GIRFT recommendations, this may involve participation in an emergency on-call rota, to be confirmed.
Additionally, there is dedicated time for subspecialty interests. While heart failure and imaging are preferred, we are open to considering other interests based on the candidate's expertise and preferences.
