Job Responsibilities

The Critical Care Service at our facility operates a fully equipped 18-bed combined ICU/HDU, capable of managing Level 3 patients. This unit provides critical care services across all departments and features a 7-day Outreach service and a consultant-led follow-up clinic.

Our hospital is equipped with a busy Interventional Cardiology Suite, and the ICU team manages patients on Intra Aortic Balloon Pumps with the support of consultant cardiologists.

The unit is an active participant in the East of England Critical Care Operational Delivery Network and has been involved in ICNARC since 1997. We have dedicated audit and research personnel, with ongoing projects that include randomized controlled trials and various studies.

The ICU team comprises two consultants, Specialty Doctors, Anaesthetic trainees, and Core medical trainees, with one consultant leading the outreach initiative.

Regular multidisciplinary consultant-led ward rounds occur at 08:00 and 17:00, including joint rounds with a Consultant Microbiologist. Our nursing staff is highly trained and dedicated, supported by a nurse practice facilitator to enhance training and skill development.

Obstetric Anaesthetic Service

All inpatient maternity services for our Trust are centralized at this facility, with over 5,000 deliveries annually. We maintain a regional block rate of approximately 40% and a caesarean section rate of 30%.

The service includes two obstetric theatres and a 2-bedded Obstetric Observation Bay, in addition to the delivery rooms in the Consultant-led obstetric unit. We also have a midwifery birthing center with eight delivery rooms.

An elective caesarean section list is scheduled each weekday morning, complemented by an anaesthetic clinic on Monday afternoons for pre-operative consultations.

Academic and Professional Development

Our Trust supports continuous professional development for all staff, with a dedicated budget for specialty doctors. Each successful candidate will undergo an annual appraisal, with guidance on professional development tailored to individual goals.

Study leave is available, and the Clinical Fellow will receive support for research initiatives aligned with clinical priorities.
