Position Overview

The Clinical Coding Department at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is embarking on a significant transformation to enhance responsiveness to the evolving needs of the organization, particularly with the recent adoption of an Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system.

There is a critical need for precise data collection and reporting with the implementation of EPR to accurately represent clinical activities and outcomes. This will ensure that our services are structured to support our patient demographics, enabling us to deliver optimal care.

This is a full-time role with opportunities for hybrid working arrangements and flexible hours to promote a healthy work-life balance for our employees.

Key Responsibilities

You will report to and collaborate with the Coding Quality Assurance Lead to design and implement a comprehensive clinical coding training program for the Trust, ensuring the highest standards of coding data to meet NHS regulatory requirements and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering regular in-house coding training sessions, including mandatory clinical coding standards courses and specialized workshops in accordance with the Approved Trainer Code of Conduct.
  • Providing constructive feedback and actionable recommendations to enhance the quality of coded data, ensuring accurate reimbursement for services rendered.
  • Working closely with clinicians, coders, and management to improve the accuracy and completeness of clinical documentation for coding purposes.
  • As a learner-focused trainer, demonstrating expertise in delivering a thorough coding training program to the team.
  • Responding to external information requests, sharing training feedback, advising the coding team on new coding guidelines, and providing necessary support.

Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A degree in human sciences or a related field.
  • A National Accredited Clinical Coder Qualification (ACC) with several years of post-accreditation experience in accurately coding complex data within acute NHS settings.
  • An NHS Digital Approved Clinical Coding Trainer Qualification.
  • Strong presentation skills and evidence of ongoing professional development.

Essential knowledge includes:

  • Expertise in ICD-10 and OPCS-4 coding rules and conventions.
  • Understanding of data security and protection standards.
  • Familiarity with NHS commissioning requirements and advanced medical terminology.

Experience in delivering coding training, producing feedback reports, and working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams is essential for this role.
