Job Summary

The Communication Support Worker will provide responsive support to deaf children and young people, and their families, to enable access to education and services. The post holder will work in partnership with the class teacher to meet the needs of deaf pupils, and support staff to learn British Sign Language (BSL) and Scottish British Sign Language (SSE).

Main Responsibilities

  • Plan and support deaf children and young people to access the curriculum.
  • Provide BSL/SSE communication support to enable access to education and services for children, young people, and their families.
  • Support staff to learn BSL/SSE.
  • Support families in accessing BSL resources.
  • Support deaf children and young people to express their views and ensure they are taken into account.
  • Work in partnership with the class teacher to meet the needs of deaf pupils.
  • Support the class, school, and wider community in using BSL.

Additional Requirements

The post holder will be required to work from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm, with some flexibility required. The post is considered Regulated Work with Children and/or Protected Adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act. The successful candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check prior to a formal offer of employment.
