PhD Researcher in Quantum Thermometry

Glasgow, Glasgow City, United Kingdom National Physical Laboratory Full time

About the Role

Temperature is a fundamental quantity that affects our daily lives and has a significant impact on various technologies. As a key quantity controlling biochemical processes, temperature plays a crucial role in the manufacture of chemicals and pharmaceuticals. It also affects the functionality and efficiency of many technologies, such as microprocessor chips, where controlling heat generation and dissipation is essential to optimize their performance and energy use.

This project aims to address the challenges associated with temperature measurement, including the need for periodic calibration and the difficulty of measuring temperature on a sub-micron scale. The goal is to develop a novel miniaturized on-chip approach using active quantum-confined semiconductor optical resonators.

The project will involve computer-based design and modeling, as well as fabrication and testing of the fabricated prototypes. The research will focus on developing practical primary thermometry by active Ring Resonator Thermometry, providing temperature traceability at the point of measurement.

About You

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented researcher to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related field. A minimum of a 2:1 degree is required, and desirable skills include Experimental Physics, Integrated Engineering, Nanotechnology, Optical Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Semiconductors, Solid State Physics, and Thermodynamics.

The studentship is available to UK (home) students and offers an enhanced stipend and covers home tuition fees for a period of four years. Irish nationals who are living in the Common Travel Area of the UK, EU nationals with settled or pre-settled status, and those with Indefinite Leave to remain status may also qualify for home fee status.
