Job Overview

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated PhD researcher to join our team in the field of advanced temperature measurement. As a PhD researcher, you will be responsible for developing and implementing a new miniaturized on-chip approach for temperature measurement using active quantum-confined semiconductor optical resonators.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, model, and fabricate prototypes of the on-chip temperature sensor at the NPL
  • Develop practical primary thermometry through active Ring Resonator Thermometry to enable temperature traceability at the precise point of measurement
  • Collaborate with our team of experts to create a fully integrated on-chip sensor with all necessary components micro-fabricated on a single device
  • Meet the target uncertainty for temperature measurement of approximately 0.1 K

Requirements

  • PhD in a relevant field such as physics, materials science, or engineering
  • Strong background in quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and semiconductor physics
  • Experience with computer-based design and modeling, as well as fabrication and testing of prototypes
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
