This position entails conducting investigations into Bell Operator violations in events featuring top quarks or Higgs bosons, alongside exploring various QI phenomena, including Quantum Discord and Quantum Tomography. The selected candidate will also play a crucial role in supporting the group's commitments to the ATLAS experiment.
Key Responsibilities
Under the mentorship of the Principal/Co-Investigator, the successful applicant will:
- Engage in a comprehensive research program within the ATLAS experiment.
- Assist in the maintenance and operational activities of the ATLAS experiment as necessary.
- Contribute to the development and upkeep of ATLAS software and data analysis tools.
- Enhance personal research profile and that of the University, including contributing to high-quality publications and increasing research impact.
- Participate in national and international conferences, workshops, and seminars to showcase research findings.
- Identify potential funding sources and aid in crafting proposals for securing research funding.
- Support the training and mentoring of undergraduate and postgraduate students, fostering their development.
- Conduct modest teaching activities and associated administrative tasks as directed.
- Stay abreast of advancements in the field and engage in professional development.
- Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by the Head of School or Research Group Leader.
For Grade 7 Appointment:
- Perform duties with increased independence and leadership, particularly in research planning and publication.
- Establish a robust track record of independent and collaborative research publications.
- Conduct literature surveys to identify research challenges and develop effective strategies.
These responsibilities are not exhaustive but highlight the major tasks expected of the staff member.
Qualifications and Skills
Essential Knowledge and Qualifications:
- A1: SCQF Level 10 (Honours degree) in a relevant discipline or equivalent.
- A2: For Grade 7, a PhD (SCQF Level 12) or equivalent professional qualifications and experience.
Desirable:
- B1: An awarded or nearly completed PhD in particle physics.
Essential Skills:
- C1: Strong statistical and data analysis capabilities.
- C2: Knowledge of contemporary research in experimental particle physics.
- C3: Proficiency in programming and software engineering, particularly in Python and/or C++.
- C4: Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to present complex concepts clearly.
- C5: Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach.
- C6: Effective time and project management skills.
- C7: Ability to work efficiently within large international teams.
- C8: Self-motivated with independent thought processes.
- C9: Problem-solving skills with a pragmatic approach.
Essential Experience:
- E1: Relevant research experience suitable for an early career researcher.
- E2: Familiarity with experimental data analysis in High Energy Physics.
- E3: Experience in scientific writing.
- E4: Proven ability to deliver quality results promptly.
- E5: An emerging track record of publications in relevant fields.
For Grade 7 Appointment:
- E6: Sufficient relevant research experience, including postdoctoral experience.
- E7: A record of presenting and publishing research results in reputable journals/conferences.
- E8: Experience in leading academic initiatives.
- E9: Demonstrated independence in project objectives and research design.
- E10: Experience in conducting independent research.
Salary and Employment Terms
Salary will be at Grade 6/7, with a competitive range. This is a full-time position with funding available for a specified duration.
