Job Overview

The University of Glasgow is inviting applications for a position as a Research Assistant within the ATLAS group, focusing on advanced data analysis in collaboration with Dr. Jay Howarth in the domain of Quantum Information (QI) at Hadron Colliders.

This role encompasses the investigation of Bell Operator violations in events featuring top quarks or Higgs bosons, alongside explorations of other QI phenomena such as Quantum Discord and Quantum Tomography. The successful candidate will also contribute to the group's obligations within the ATLAS experiment.


Key Responsibilities
  1. Conduct research activities related to the ATLAS experiment under the supervision of the Principal/Co-Investigator.
  2. Assist in the maintenance and operational aspects of the ATLAS experiment as necessary.
  3. Participate in the development and upkeep of ATLAS software and data analysis tools.
  4. Enhance your research profile and that of the University of Glasgow by contributing to high-quality publications in reputable journals.
  5. Present research findings at national and international conferences, seminars, and workshops to elevate your research profile.
  6. Identify potential funding sources and aid in the preparation of proposals to secure funding for future research initiatives.
  7. Support the training and mentoring of undergraduate and postgraduate students and junior team members.
  8. Engage in modest teaching activities and related administrative tasks as directed.
  9. Stay informed about recent advancements in the field.
  10. Participate in professional development activities as appropriate.
  11. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head of School or Research Group Leader.
  12. Contribute to enhancing the University’s international profile in alignment with its strategic objectives.

For Grade 7 Appointment:
  1. Execute the aforementioned duties with greater independence and leadership, particularly in planning, funding, collaboration, and research publication.
  2. Establish a consistent record of independent and collaborative published research to solidify your expertise in the field.
  3. Review relevant literature and research challenges to formulate and implement an effective research strategy.

These responsibilities are not exhaustive but represent key tasks expected of the staff member.

Required Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
Essential Knowledge and Qualifications:
A1 A relevant Honours degree (SCQF Level 10) or equivalent.

For Grade 7 Appointment:
A2 Typically, a PhD (SCQF Level 12) or equivalent professional qualifications and experience, with relevant experience in a similar role.

Desirable:
B1 A PhD in particle physics that has been awarded, recently submitted, or is nearing completion.

Essential Skills:
C1 Strong statistical and data analysis capabilities.
C2 Familiarity with contemporary research in experimental particle physics.
C3 Proficient programming and software engineering skills in Python and/or C++.
C4 Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to present complex data clearly.
C5 Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach.
C6 Effective project and time management skills.
C7 Ability to work efficiently within large international teams.

Essential Experience:
