Criticality Safety Engineer
4 weeks ago
We are seeking a dedicated Criticality Safety Engineer to become a vital part of our Fuel and Core Branch (F&CB) within the Nuclear Services Business.
This role is ideal for individuals with a strong foundation in science or mathematics who possess a genuine enthusiasm for learning. The primary focus will be on enhancing expertise in Criticality Safety, enabling the individual to study, analyze, and offer expert guidance on nuclear aspects related to the handling and storage of fissile materials at nuclear power facilities.
This position presents an excellent opportunity to deepen your understanding of nuclear fuel design and operational processes within a supportive project environment. Additionally, there are numerous avenues to explore other technical domains, particularly in Reactor Physics, which entails evaluating reactor neutronic and thermal hydraulic behavior to ensure compliance with Nuclear Site Licences.
As a member of the Reactor Physics and Criticality Group, you will report directly to the Group Leader and collaborate closely with various Nuclear Services teams, EDF Licensee Groups, and Power Stations.
Compensation and Workplace Culture:
We offer a competitive salary, reflecting your skills, experience, and qualifications.
At EDF, we embrace diversity and inclusivity, fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to express themselves. We are committed to promoting equality and diversity, aiming for a balanced workforce that includes individuals from various backgrounds, including minority ethnic groups, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those with disabilities.
We are a disability confident employer and are dedicated to assisting with your application process, providing necessary adjustments as required.
Key Responsibilities:
As a Criticality Safety Engineer, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Conducting Monte Carlo simulations of neutron transport equations using geometric models of nuclear fuel under diverse conditions and fault scenarios;
- Evaluating proposed fuel route operations to identify potential hazards and criticality risks;
- Analyzing faults to assess risks and recommend safety measures in accordance with the ALARP principle;
- Implementing criticality safety cases to the required standards and integrating them into the station safety case;
- Reviewing other safety cases to assess their impact on criticality safety and providing necessary advice;
- Offering guidance to station personnel in response to on-site events and evolving situations;
- Collaborating with station staff and other technical areas to discuss training, operational experiences, and work requirements;
- Maintaining required codes (verification & validation, version control, etc.) and managing tasks in a UNIX environment;
- Clearly defining tasks for others, collaborating with supply chain partners, and acting as an Intelligent Customer for externally produced work;
- Assisting the Group Leader in managing strategy, risk, work planning, resources, and budgets as appropriate.
Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A robust background in science or mathematics.
- A strong desire to learn and grow professionally.
- Self-motivation, initiative, and sound judgment to drive projects to timely completion.
- Excellent teamwork skills, along with strong written and verbal communication abilities, organizational skills, and analytical capabilities.
This position is suitable for recent graduates or individuals with equivalent academic qualifications and experience, as a comprehensive training program will be provided. However, prior experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:
- Experience in nuclear reactor physics, neutron transport, or reactor engineering.
- Familiarity with modeling and simulation concepts, prediction uncertainties, verification, and validation.
- Technical computing experience in a UNIX-like environment, including scripting and data analysis tools.
- Proficiency in Monte Carlo computer modeling codes and techniques (e.g., MONK, MCNP, SERPENT).
- Knowledge of legislative requirements within the Nuclear Industry, particularly regarding safety case development.
- Experience with AGR or PWR operations from a Nuclear Safety Group or Operations perspective.
We value the unique contributions you bring and are committed to providing opportunities for your professional growth and success.
