Overview

As a pivotal member of Aurora's Global Energy Markets research division, based in Oxford, you will engage in the continuous production of research and publications, while developing innovative analyses that address client needs and enhance our service offerings.

This role requires an Associate who will take a leading position within the team, managing projects, interacting with clients, and representing the organization in external engagements. The primary focus will be on the Global Energy Markets, specifically gas, oil, and coal, with an emphasis on the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) regions, alongside broader global market analysis. You will monitor significant developments in global energy commodities and provide insightful reports on how these markets are influenced by decarbonization initiatives and the rise of low-carbon technologies.

The Global Energy Markets team is responsible for producing Aurora's core outlook and scenarios regarding gas, oil, and coal markets, which are integral to our power market analyses. Although this role is situated within our Subscription Analytics team, the successful candidate will also contribute to commodities-focused projects within our Advisory team, which may include strategic advisory and transaction support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead research initiatives in the European, Middle Eastern, and African energy commodity sectors, collaborating closely with Aurora's modelling and power teams to generate regular market forecasts and innovative analyses.
  • Investigate critical short- and long-term market trends and analyze policy developments affecting gas, coal, and oil markets, with a specific focus on the EMEA region.
  • Produce timely and thorough quantitative analyses to support clients' decision-making processes, particularly in relation to financial transactions involving energy assets.
  • Effectively communicate findings to clients through various channels, including meetings, calls, workshops, and conferences.
  • Contribute to the development of Aurora's product offerings by identifying new opportunities for engaging and commercially relevant analyses, thereby expanding our capabilities and impact.
Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications:
  • A minimum of three years of experience in European natural gas, oil, or coal markets, acquired through roles in energy companies, commodity price reporting agencies, leading consultancies, energy trading firms, or financial services organizations.
  • Proven ability to gather, analyze, and interpret complex quantitative data.
  • Strong interest in energy markets and commodities, particularly in natural gas, oil, or coal.
  • Successful track record in project and process management within collaborative environments.
  • Experience in leading teams to deliver time-sensitive projects.
  • Self-motivated with an entrepreneurial mindset and a desire to contribute to business growth.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g., SQL, PowerBI, advanced Excel).
  • Exceptional written communication skills.
  • Fluency in English at a native or professional level.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience with or knowledge of Middle Eastern or African energy markets, particularly in natural gas, oil, or coal.
  • Demonstrated success in client-facing roles.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Understanding of key financial metrics and economic principles (NPV, IRR, DCF).
  • Academic or practical experience in forecasting macroeconomic indicators.
  • First-class degree from a reputable university in a quantitative discipline (Energy Science, Economics, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Engineering, Finance).
  • Competence in advanced data analytics (e.g., R, Python, GAMS, Matlab).
  • Relevant Master's degree or PhD.
  • Proficiency in a European language or Arabic, both written and spoken.
