About the Role

The NHS is seeking to appoint a Senior Gastroenterology Consultant as part of an expansion initiative within our healthcare team. This position offers a chance to become part of a progressive and collaborative environment.

The successful candidate will initially work within a dedicated hospital setting and will be integrated into the Gastroenterology Department.

Applicants must possess Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) or equivalent credentials, and must be fully registered with the General Medical Council, holding a license to practice and listed on the Specialist Register, or expected to be registered within six months of appointment.

Key Responsibilities

The appointed individual, alongside fellow team members, will be committed to delivering high-quality Gastroenterology services. The primary focus will be on Luminal Gastroenterology, while also accommodating the appointee's specific subspecialty interests.

Ward responsibilities will be shared on a rotational basis, with consultants participating in 'hot' weeks for two-week intervals. A significant portion of our ward patients (>90%) present with primary gastrointestinal disorders.

The ideal candidate will also be involved in Endoscopy and Outpatient sessions. A commitment to a 1:11 on-call duty and out-of-hours coverage is expected, with on-call sessions acknowledged within job plans in addition to the on-call supplement.

Weekend on-call duties currently encompass patient evaluations in acute settings and overseeing Gastroenterology inpatients, along with providing out-of-hours endoscopy for cases of gastrointestinal hemorrhage.

Subspecialty interests available for development at our institution include Advanced Endoscopy, Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) disorders, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Nutrition, Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP), Capsule Endoscopy, and Educational roles.

Job Specifications

The appointed Consultant will have a strong commitment to the provision of Gastroenterology services, focusing primarily on Luminal Gastroenterology while incorporating their desired subspecialty interests.

Ward cover will be organized on a rotational basis, with the majority of our ward patients dealing with primary GI disorders.

Endoscopy and Outpatient sessions will also be part of the responsibilities. The expectation includes a 1:11 on-call commitment and out-of-hours coverage, with on-call sessions recognized within our job plans.

Weekend on-call responsibilities include reviewing Gastroenterology inpatients and providing out-of-hours endoscopy for patients experiencing GI hemorrhage.

An office equipped with necessary IT support will be allocated. The appointee will share a Personal Assistant, with additional typing tasks delegated to other secretarial team members as needed.

In accordance with the Consultant contract, the job plan is structured into 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), typically comprising 8.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA), with additional SPA time available for specific roles.

Teaching is highly encouraged within the Trust and the Gastroenterology Directorate. The department handles a diverse range of complex benign and malignant gastroenterological conditions, providing an enriching learning environment for medical students, junior doctors, and allied health professionals. Regular multidisciplinary team meetings are held, including IBD, radiology, nutrition, and cancer-focused sessions.

A dynamic departmental training lead ensures the delivery of high-quality training for medical students, trainees, and nurse endoscopists.
