Responsibilities: The appointee will participate in ward cover on a rotational basis, engaging in hot weeks for two-week intervals. The majority of inpatients will present with primary gastrointestinal disorders. The role includes responsibilities for Endoscopy and outpatient sessions, with an expectation of a 1:11 on-call commitment, which encompasses out-of-hours cover. Weekend on-call duties involve the review of Gastroenterology inpatients and provision of emergency endoscopy for patients experiencing gastrointestinal hemorrhage.

Subspecialty Development: Opportunities for developing subspecialty interests at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust include Advanced Endoscopy, Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) disorders, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Nutrition, the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP), Capsule Endoscopy, and Educational roles.

Administrative Support: An office equipped with necessary IT support will be provided. The appointee will share a Personal Assistant (PA), with additional typing responsibilities managed by the secretarial team as needed. In alignment with the Consultant contract, the job plan is structured into 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), typically comprising 8.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA), with potential for additional SPA time for specific roles.

Teaching and Training: The department emphasizes teaching, encouraging active participation in both undergraduate and postgraduate education, as well as providing endoscopic training. Participation in Train the Trainers programs will be required.

Learning Environment: The Gastroenterology Department offers a diverse array of complex benign and malignant gastrointestinal conditions, fostering a rich educational atmosphere for medical students, junior doctors, and allied health professionals. Regular multidisciplinary team meetings, including IBD, radiology, nutrition, and cancer-focused sessions, enhance collaborative learning and patient care.
