Position Overview

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit a Senior Gastroenterology Consultant to enhance our expanding team of healthcare professionals. This role presents a unique opportunity to become part of a progressive and collaborative environment.

The selected candidate will initially work at Aintree Hospital, contributing to the Gastroenterology Department.

Key Responsibilities

The appointed individual will collaborate with fellow consultants to ensure comprehensive Gastroenterology services. The primary focus will be on Luminal Gastroenterology, tailored to the appointee's subspecialty interests.

Ward responsibilities will be shared on a rotational basis, with consultants participating in 'hot' weeks for two-week intervals. A significant portion of our inpatients (>90%) present with primary gastrointestinal conditions.

The successful candidate will also be involved in Endoscopy and outpatient services. A commitment to a 1:11 on-call schedule and out-of-hours coverage is expected, with on-call duties acknowledged within job plans alongside additional compensation.

Weekend on-call duties will include patient evaluations in acute settings and overseeing Gastroenterology inpatients, as well as providing urgent endoscopic interventions for gastrointestinal hemorrhages.

Subspecialty areas available for development at Aintree encompass Advanced Endoscopy, Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) disorders, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Nutritional support, Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP), Capsule Endoscopy, and Educational initiatives.

An office equipped with necessary IT resources will be allocated. The appointee will share a Personal Assistant, with additional typing responsibilities delegated to other secretarial staff as needed.

In accordance with the Consultant contract, the job plan is structured into 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), typically encompassing Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and core Supporting Professional Activities (SPA), with opportunities for additional SPA time for specific roles.

Teaching is highly encouraged within the Trust and the Gastroenterology Directorate. The department addresses a diverse array of complex benign and malignant gastrointestinal diseases, providing an enriching educational environment for medical students, junior doctors, and allied health professionals. Regular multidisciplinary team meetings, including IBD, radiology, nutrition, and cancer-focused sessions, are integral to our operations.

We have a dedicated departmental training lead committed to delivering high-quality training for medical students, trainees, and nurse endoscopists. The post holder will be expected to engage actively in both undergraduate and postgraduate education, including endoscopic training.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration
  • MB BS or MB ChB qualification
  • MRCP certification
  • CCT or eligibility within six months of CCT

Desirable

  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians
  • Advanced degree such as MD or PhD

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience in gastroenterology
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing medical education
  • Proficiency in managing endoscopic interventions for gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Accreditation in colonoscopy (JAG or equivalent)

  • Significant experience in managing patients with IBD
  • Expertise in addressing complex nutritional issues
