Role Description

The Traffic Commissioner Support Specialist operates within the Office of the Traffic Commissioner (OTC).

The Traffic Commissioners are tasked with overseeing the licensing and regulation of operators of heavy and light goods vehicles engaged in international transport, as well as buses and coaches (public service vehicles) and their drivers. They also handle the registration of local bus services and adjudicate appeals regarding the impounding of vehicles operated without a valid operator's license.

This role is integral to a team that supports the independently appointed Traffic Commissioner in fulfilling their statutory responsibilities related to the licensing and regulation of goods and public service vehicle operators, as well as vocational driving license holders.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Preparing cases for public inquiries and managing post-hearing documentation to ensure all necessary parties have access to required case materials.
  • Clerking public inquiry hearings at designated venues.
  • Adhering to statutory guidance and directives from the Senior Traffic Commissioner and relevant Operating Instructions.
  • Ensuring the timely preparation and dispatch of call-up letters and briefs in accordance with OTC procedures.
  • Providing accurate records of the Traffic Commissioner’s decisions or written directives to all relevant parties.
  • Handling telephone and written inquiries positively, while complying with data protection legislation and statutory guidance.
  • Executing responsibilities effectively in alignment with Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) policies, ensuring daily tasks meet agreed objectives.
  • Collaborating with colleagues across functions to foster a high-performing and respected Agency.
  • Liaising with internal and external departments to meet customer needs and communicate requirements effectively.

Candidate Profile

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to draft complex submissions within a legislative framework.
  • Strong organizational and administrative capabilities, with a proven ability to prioritize tasks based on risk assessment.
  • The capacity to analyze and summarize cases, preparing briefs and correspondence while referencing relevant legislation.

Additional Information

This role offers flexibility in location, with opportunities available in various sites. The position operates under a hybrid working model, allowing for a blend of in-office and remote work, with an expectation of a minimum of 60% time spent at the designated base location.

Successful candidates will be required to work a minimum of 30 hours per week. This position is offered on a Fixed Term Appointment basis.
