Position Overview

The Breast Care Nursing Specialist is responsible for delivering expert nursing guidance, care, and support to individuals diagnosed with breast cancer. This role emphasizes the provision of high-quality, personalized care to patients, their families, and caregivers, both in inpatient and outpatient settings, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team while adhering to established local and national standards.

The primary focus is to ensure that patient needs are prioritized in all aspects of care delivery, often serving as a 'key worker' when appropriate.

The role aims to enhance the patient experience throughout their healthcare journey.

Additionally, the specialist may take on delegated responsibilities from their line manager related to the advancement of their role and clinical specialty.

Acting as a professional role model, the Breast Care Nursing Specialist will provide both direct and indirect clinical care, engage in teaching, and participate in research initiatives.

Collaboration with senior team members is essential to further develop the clinical nurse specialist role in alignment with local and national policies, ensuring that patient and family needs are central to service enhancement efforts.

Key Responsibilities

The Breast Care Nursing Specialist will be tasked with the following:

  • Delivering specialized, high-quality nursing care and support for patients and their caregivers diagnosed with breast cancer, ensuring effective coordination of care within the healthcare system.
  • Playing a vital role within the multidisciplinary team to meet cancer waiting time targets and facilitate effective communication along care pathways.
  • Serving as a specialist resource for patients and clinical teams by providing comprehensive advice, information, education, and training both internally and externally.
  • Continuously updating clinical and specialist knowledge, contributing to audit processes, and engaging in nursing research with the aim of published outcomes.
  • Promoting excellence in clinical practice and establishing quality standards within the specialty.
  • Compiling an annual report and clinical audit of the specialist nursing service and its outcomes.
  • Actively participating in the development of services at both local and national levels.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • NMC registration and a degree in a relevant field.
  • Post-registration qualifications in specialty or related areas (Cancer or Palliative Care).
  • Completion of an Advanced Communication course and Level 2 Psychological Skills training.
  • A recognized teaching qualification or demonstrable teaching experience.

Desirable

  • MSc or MA in a related specialty.
  • Completion of a recognized physical assessment module at level 7.
  • Training in quality improvement methodologies.

Experience

Essential

  • Significant post-registration experience at Band 6 or above in the specialty.
  • Experience working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
  • Experience in teaching and assessing others.
  • Experience in audit and service development initiatives.

Desirable

  • Leadership and management experience.
  • Research experience.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Essential

  • In-depth knowledge of the specialty and application of evidence-based practices.
  • Demonstrated advanced communication skills and ability to manage complex situations.
