We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Band 6 Breast Care Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our esteemed team at The Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth. Our Breast Unit is committed to delivering exceptional patient care to all individuals who utilize our services. Our consultants strive to provide a comprehensive service to patients requiring breast consultations, including consultations and radiological assessments during their visits.

The successful candidate will be responsible for offering information, education, and support to patients, their partners, and families who are undergoing assessments and treatments for both benign and malignant breast conditions, with a focus on symptom management and control. The post holder will provide clinical leadership within the Breast Unit, ensuring the delivery of high-quality nursing care to all service users, acting as a role model and expert practitioner, and assisting in the effective management of the department within available resources.

Main Responsibilities of the Breast Care Clinical Nurse Specialist:

  • Serve as a clinical expert within the Breast Unit.
  • Assess new patients, identifying their physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, and cultural needs concerning their condition and proposed treatments, while creating a tailored nursing care pathway.
  • Provide emotional support to patients and their families, demonstrating a compassionate and empathetic demeanor at all times.
  • Foster strong working relationships with relevant staff across various settings.
  • Act as a patient advocate when necessary, educating on all treatment options to empower patients in making informed decisions, and collaborating with the medical team to establish a care pathway.
  • Ensure patients and their families receive appropriate oral and written information regarding planned care and the disease process.
  • Develop individualized patient treatment plans in collaboration with the medical team, ensuring timely organization of investigations and treatments, and placing each patient in the correct treatment protocol.
  • Independently review patients and initiate changes in care management as required.
  • Network and establish liaison roles with other specialized care providers as needed.
  • Continuously develop and maintain the clinical skills and knowledge necessary to provide holistic, evidence-based nursing care, including completing training and development identified in personal development planning.
  • Demonstrate competence in performing relevant outpatient procedures, such as dressing changes and drain removals.
  • Assist in the development and review of policies and standards for the safe use of equipment and any new technologies introduced to the department.
  • Support effective communication among all members of the multidisciplinary team, other hospital departments, relatives, and visitors.
  • Initiate and participate in audits related to nursing and multidisciplinary care.
  • Promote breast awareness among staff, patients, and families.

Are You the Right Fit for This Role?

  • Current NMC registration in adult or general nursing.
  • Educated to first-degree level or equivalent.
  • Breast Care qualification is desirable.
  • Significant post-registration experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years post-registration experience in nursing.
  • At least 6 months of experience working within a Breast Unit or ward.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Professional commitment and self-awareness.
  • Ability to motivate oneself and others.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Capability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Sound knowledge of current nursing issues and developments.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and skills in various clinical specialties within an outpatient setting are desirable.
