Job Title: Head of Learning Support and SENCo

This is a crucial and exciting role, offering significant scope for the appointee to build on the work of the previous Head of Learning Support within a thriving and popular department.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage the provision for learning support across the school.
  • Maintain an oversight of the work and performance of a team of specialist SpLDs and EAL staff.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews with each, which will involve observing lessons, setting and reviewing targets, planning for further professional training etc.
  • Advise the Headmistress and Deputy Head (Academic) on staffing issues and needs as well as suitability of potential Pupil applicants to the school.
  • Ensure close liaison with Admissions for new Pupils.
  • Organise Educational Psychologists and/or Psychiatrists assessments, to assist in identifying Pupils to manage their needs.
  • Analyse the results of the assessments, summarising the data and information and explaining it to teaching staff so that they can differentiate appropriately and make their lessons accessible and effective.
  • Make full use of the school's information management system and other technology.
  • Plan, arrange and oversee the timetables for the Learning Support Department, ensuring that all Pupils who request and require support lessons may receive them at appropriate times.
  • Collate, monitor and communicate information about Pupils' progress, both in sessions and in other lessons when Pupils are raised as causes for concern.
  • Work with Pupils, their tutors, Heads of Year and parents to help understand the results of assessments and how best to proceed in arranging support.
  • Teach one-to-one or small-group teaching of Pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, or Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties (SEMH).
  • Fulfill all the other duties and expectations of a teacher as defined by the school contract.
  • Line manage the English as an Additional Language Department (EAL).
  • Arrange and conduct literacy and numeracy assessments for Pupils within the school.
Requirements:
  • Evidence of effectively using assessment data to inform optimal SEND provision.
  • Ability to develop and sustain effective rapport and communication with pupils and staff.
  • Evidence of continued professional development and awareness of wider educational developments.
  • Commitment to the school's safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Commitment to participation in the Co-curricular programme and duties required by the school.
  • Qualified Teacher Status.
  • National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination (NASENDCO).
  • Ability to devise strategies to ensure aspirational Pupil achievement.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent teaching practices against the current Teaching Standards.
