  • Conduct Evaluations of Advanced AI Systems: You will assess the safety-related capabilities of cutting-edge AI technologies, examining their security measures and societal implications.
  • Innovate AI Governance Tools: Your role will involve creating effective frameworks and methodologies to evaluate the safety and societal impacts of advanced AI systems, anticipating future research needs in AI governance.
  • Facilitate Collaborative Information Sharing: You will establish effective communication channels between our department and various national and international stakeholders, including policymakers and partners.

Core Responsibilities:

As a Research Scientist or Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in defining our approach to AI system evaluations, particularly focusing on large language models (LLMs). You will be responsible for developing and maintaining comprehensive evaluation frameworks for these technologies.

Your work will encompass a variety of research areas, including:

  • Chemical and Biological Implications: Investigating how LLMs and specialized AI systems can influence biological and chemical capabilities, including potential risks.
  • Cybersecurity Concerns: Analyzing the role of LLMs in cyber-criminal activities and evaluating the effectiveness of existing cybersecurity measures.
  • Safety and Security Assessments: Evaluating the robustness of safety mechanisms in advanced AI systems against diverse threats.
  • Societal Impact Analysis: Assessing the broader implications of advanced AI models on societal trust, psychological well-being, and equitable outcomes.
  • Autonomous Systems Evaluation: Testing for indicators of potential loss of control in AI systems, focusing on their ability to adapt and interact with human interventions.
  • Platform Support: Collaborating with the platform team to ensure the necessary infrastructure and tools are in place for effective research and security.

You will collaborate closely with the Workstream Lead and other researchers, benefiting from cross-functional support. There will be ample opportunity to influence the strategic direction of your team and design experiments of increasing complexity.

Candidate Profile:

We seek individuals with a strong background in research or engineering, particularly in machine learning, AI security, or related fields. Ideal candidates will possess:

  • Experience in relevant industries or academia.
  • Proficiency in developing software systems for research purposes.
  • Knowledge of advanced machine learning techniques and statistics.
  • A keen interest in understanding AI systems and their security implications.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.

Core Requirements:

  • Availability to work a minimum of four days per week.
  • Commitment to a minimum duration of twelve months.
  • Flexibility to work both in-office and remotely.
