  • Conducting Evaluations of Advanced AI Systems: Analyzing safety-critical capabilities, understanding the security of systems, and evaluating their societal implications.
  • Developing Innovative Governance Tools: Creating frameworks and methodologies to assess the safety and societal effects of cutting-edge AI technologies, while anticipating future research needs in AI governance.
  • Enhancing Communication Channels: Establishing effective information-sharing pathways between the Department and various stakeholders, including policymakers and international partners.

Team Overview

The Chem/Bio team is focused on addressing unforeseen developments in AI related to biological and chemical domains, aiming to prevent potential risks to society.

By examining the progress of large language models and specific AI applications in biology and chemistry, the team assesses possible adverse outcomes and future scenarios, such as the design of biological agents.

As a Research Scientist/Research Engineer specializing in AI applications for biology and chemistry, you will play a crucial role in evaluating these models.

This team collaborates closely with other departments and government entities to ensure that research findings contribute to AI safety and the security of chemical and biological materials through informed policy recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

In your capacity as a Research Scientist/Research Engineer focusing on AI tools for biology and chemistry, your duties will include:

  • Designing evaluation tasks for various protein design tools.
  • Testing new biological models against diverse reference datasets.
  • Identifying public datasets for validating predictions.
  • Setting up new models on computational clusters.
  • Presenting research findings in formats accessible to policymakers.
  • Exploring novel applications or combinations of tools to push their boundaries.
  • Optimizing and developing models for efficient testing.

We welcome candidates with varying levels of experience, particularly those with expertise in AI/ML, Protein Design, Microbiology, or Virology.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent in Computational Biochemistry, Machine Learning, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • For Research Scientist applicants, a strong record of technical outputs such as publications or software packages is required.
  • For Research Engineer applicants, demonstrable experience in developing machine/deep learning models is necessary.
  • Familiarity with modern deep learning techniques (Transformers, Diffusion).
  • Proficiency in relevant literature and strong programming skills (Python preferred).
  • Numerical skills and adaptability to changing priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills for engaging with diverse stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications for Research Scientist

  • Experience in designing experiments related to protein design or similar fields.
  • International collaboration experience and subject matter expertise.

Preferred Qualifications for Research Engineer

  • Experience in optimizing large-scale models and working with complex datasets.
  • A passion for science and collaborative work.

Core Requirements

  • Availability for at least 4 days per week and a commitment of at least 12 months.
  • Ability to work in a flexible environment with options for remote work.
