In this role, you will engage in:

  • Evaluating Advanced AI Systems: Analyzing safety-critical capabilities, understanding system integrity, and assessing the societal implications of AI technologies.
  • Developing Governance Tools: Crafting frameworks and methodologies to assess the safety and societal impacts of advanced AI systems, while anticipating future research needs in AI governance.
  • Promoting Knowledge Sharing: Establishing effective communication pathways between the Department and national/international stakeholders, including policymakers and partners.

Core Responsibilities

As a Research Scientist/Research Engineer with a focus on AI applications in biology and chemistry, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Designing evaluation tasks for various protein design tools.
  • Testing innovative biological models using diverse reference datasets.
  • Identifying and utilizing public datasets for predictive testing.
  • Setting up advanced models on computational clusters.
  • Communicating research findings in clear formats suitable for policymakers.
  • Exploring novel applications or methodologies to enhance existing tools.
  • Optimizing and constructing models for efficient testing processes.

We encourage applications from candidates with varying levels of experience, particularly those with expertise in AI/ML, Protein Design, Microbiology, or Virology.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent in Computational Biochemistry, Machine Learning, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • For Research Scientist applicants, a strong portfolio of technical outputs such as publications or software contributions is essential.
  • For Research Engineer applicants, demonstrable experience in developing machine/deep learning models is required.
  • Familiarity with contemporary deep learning techniques (Transformers, Diffusion).
  • Proficient coding skills, preferably in Python, and a solid understanding of relevant literature.
  • Numerical aptitude and adaptability to shifting priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills for engaging with diverse stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

For Research Scientist Candidates

  • Experience in experimental design related to protein engineering or similar fields.
  • International collaboration experience and recognized subject matter expertise.

For Research Engineer Candidates

  • Experience in optimizing large-scale models and handling complex datasets.
  • A passion for scientific inquiry and collaborative work.

Core Requirements

  • Availability for a minimum of 4 days per week with a commitment of at least 12 months.
  • Ability to work in a flexible environment that accommodates both office and remote work.
