Position Overview

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is seeking a dynamic leader to oversee our security operations, ensuring the safety and integrity of our critical infrastructure. This role is pivotal in fostering a culture of security excellence while collaborating with various stakeholders across the public sector.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and enhance the APHA Security framework and the Weybridge Security Management System.
  • Provide strategic guidance to the APHA Executive Board regarding security risk management and operational directives.
  • Participate in the formulation of the Defra Group security strategy and policies as a member of the Property Security Management Board.
  • Integrate industry best practices into all security operations within APHA.
  • Promote a robust security culture throughout the organization, ensuring adherence to effective practices.
  • Analyze and communicate the context of business and information risks related to physical, personnel, and cyber security threats.
  • Lead and develop the security team, exemplifying Civil Service values and fostering professional growth.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to refine the Threat Vulnerability Risk Analysis (TVRA) and enhance APHA Operating Requirements.
  • Deliver operational leadership and continuous improvement for the APHA Security Function as part of the senior leadership team.
  • Offer expert advice and support for incident investigations related to security matters.

Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Expertise in security and risk management, with a focus on future risk identification and mitigation strategies.
  • A background in physical security, personnel security, cyber security, or related technology fields.
  • Demonstrated experience in defining security requirements and high-level design criteria across various domains.
  • A track record in security compliance, business continuity, or incident management roles.
  • Leadership experience in a governmental or large corporate setting within high-risk industries.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively across organizational boundaries to achieve results.
  • Experience managing supplier relationships and contracts.

Qualifications:

Applicants should hold a Level 5 Security Management qualification, a Certificate from the Business Continuity Institute or equivalent, and a Cyber Security qualification such as CISSP or equivalent.
