In the role of Senior Immunologist, you will be responsible for planning, managing, and executing research and development initiatives focused on the pathogenesis and immunology of veterinary viruses. This position will oversee the immunology efforts and contribute to the research strategy of the Mammalian Virology workgroup, while also supporting emergency responses related to disease outbreaks within the Virology Department.
The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) operates as an executive agency under the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, serving the interests of the Scottish and Welsh Governments. Our team consists of over 3,000 dedicated professionals who collaborate to provide research, guidance, and support to the UK Government, ensuring the protection of animal, public, and plant health for the benefit of our environment and economy.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead research projects and design methodologies for scientific inquiries, ensuring that project goals and milestones are met to the satisfaction of stakeholders, while adhering to relevant Quality Assurance standards and budget constraints.
- Participate as a senior scientist within the Workgroup, contributing to strategic planning through delegated tasks and responsibilities.
- Communicate scientific findings effectively by engaging in both internal and external meetings, and ensuring that high-quality scientific work is published in peer-reviewed journals.
- Identify and pursue opportunities for collaborative research proposals, both nationally and internationally, particularly through avenues beyond UK government funding.
- Prepare applications for funding and secure necessary permissions for research activities.
- Enhance and maintain the immunology knowledge base within the workgroup to support ongoing research initiatives.
- Stay informed about technological advancements that could enhance the research program focused on host-pathogen interactions.
- Oversee flow cytometry and spatial immunology activities, providing training and support in experimental design and execution.
- Offer consultancy services to stakeholders, including government departments and industry partners.
- Supervise and mentor staff, students, and visitors within the workgroup.
- Ensure that both you and your team adhere to safety protocols in the laboratory, including high containment environments, fostering a culture of continuous improvement in health and safety practices.
- Act as the designated officer for the immunology laboratory, upholding good laboratory practices and standards.
- Participate in emergency response efforts during disease outbreaks and be available for on-call duties as necessary.
Candidate Profile
To be successful in this role, you should possess:
- In-depth knowledge of immunology, particularly in relation to pathogenesis, vaccine development, and molecular characterization, including experience with advanced techniques such as multi-parameter flow cytometry and single-cell analyses.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, enabling the delivery of high-quality manuscripts, presentations, and reports.
- The ability to network effectively and provide immunological expertise across various departments.
- A solid understanding of the requirements for working in containment level 3 environments and bio-safety protocols.
- Experience with Good Laboratory Practice and quality management systems, such as ISO9001.
Qualifications
A PhD and post-doctoral experience, or equivalent professional experience, is required.
