Biological Risk Management Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Biological Risk Advisor to join our team at the Animal and Plant Health Agency. As a Biological Risk Advisor, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our staff and the public by providing expert advice on biological risk management.
Key Responsibilities- Biological Risk Management: Develop and implement effective biological risk management strategies to mitigate potential risks to staff and the public.
- Assurance Activities: Conduct regular assurance activities to ensure compliance with legal requirements and identify areas for improvement.
- Incident Investigations: Investigate accidents and incidents, including root cause analysis and human factors analysis, to identify lessons learned and implement corrective actions.
- Line Management: Act as a functional line manager for Departmental Safety Officers and high containment Building Officers.
- Risk Assessments: Ensure that risk assessments relating to high containment work are suitable and sufficient.
- Committee Membership: Act as a member of the APHA Biological Safety Committee, reviewing risk assessments for ACDP3, SAPO3, and SAPO4 work and GM risk assessments.
- Training and Development: Deliver the APHA Biological Risk Training programme and undertake annual review of content to ensure it remains relevant and effective.
- Safety Performance Indicators: Collate and analyse Safety Performance Indicators for APHA SAPO4 facilities.
- Regulatory Compliance: Undertake preparatory work prior to visits by the Regulator in line with the Health and Safety Executive APHA intervention plan.
- Microbiology Laboratory Experience: Must have experience working in a microbiology laboratory and a bio-containment environment.
- Technical Knowledge: Must have sufficient technical knowledge and standing to be respected and followed.
- Health and Safety Experience: Must have experience managing within Health and Safety and a commitment to the management of safety.
- Qualifications: Must hold a NEBOSH qualification or be committed to acquiring this training and achieving these qualifications.
- Communication Skills: Must be a good communicator and able to obtain cooperation and input from colleagues.
- Leadership Skills: Must demonstrate confidence influencing upwards to senior managers.
