In the role of Senior Immunologist, you will be responsible for orchestrating, managing, and implementing research and development initiatives focused on the immunology and pathogenesis of veterinary viruses. This position will oversee the immunology efforts and bolster the research strategy within the Mammalian Virology workgroup, while also supporting emergency responses to disease outbreaks in the Virology Department.
The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) operates as an executive agency under the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, serving the interests of the Scottish and Welsh Governments. Our dedicated team of over 3,000 professionals collaborates to provide essential research, guidance, and support to the UK Government, ensuring the protection of animal, public, and plant health for the benefit of the environment and economy.

Key Responsibilities
- Oversee research projects and devise methodologies for scientific inquiries, ensuring that project goals and milestones are met to the satisfaction of stakeholders while adhering to relevant Quality Assurance standards and budget constraints.
- Act as a member of the senior scientist team within the Workgroup, contributing to strategic planning through delegated tasks and responsibilities.
- Communicate scientific findings by participating in both internal and external meetings, and ensure a robust program of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals with significant impact.
- Identify and pursue opportunities for initiating collaborative research proposals, both domestically and internationally, particularly through avenues beyond UK government funding.
- Prepare applications for funding agencies and secure necessary permissions for research activities.
- Enhance and maintain the immunology knowledge base within the workgroup to support research initiatives across the department.
- Stay informed about technological advancements that could be leveraged to advance the research program on host-pathogen interactions.
- Supervise flow cytometry and spatial immunology efforts within the workgroup, including training and assisting in experimental design and execution.
- Provide expert consultancy to stakeholders, including governmental departments and industry partners.
- Mentor and train staff, students, and visitors within the workgroup.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols in laboratory operations, including high containment laboratories, fostering a culture of continuous improvement in health and safety practices.
- Serve as the room officer for the immunology laboratory, upholding good laboratory practices and standards.
- Participate in disease emergency responses as necessary.
Candidate Profile
Successful candidates will demonstrate the following:
- In-depth knowledge of immunology, particularly in pathogenesis, vaccine research, and molecular characterization, including multi-parameter flow cytometry and advanced immunological analyses.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of producing manuscripts, presentations, applications, and reports.
- Ability to network and provide immunological expertise across various departments.
- Understanding of containment level 3 requirements and bio-safety protocols.
- Experience with Good Laboratory Practice and quality management systems such as ISO9001.
Qualifications
PhD and post-doctoral experience, or equivalent professional experience.
