Litigation Counsel – Insurance Coverage

We are seeking a skilled attorney with significant expertise in insurance coverage disputes to become a vital member of our Litigation team. This group offers legal counsel on both first and third-party coverage issues across a diverse array of property, casualty, and specialty insurance sectors, playing a crucial role in our in-house claims operations.

As a Litigation Counsel specializing in insurance coverage, your responsibilities will encompass providing extensive legal guidance to claims professionals regarding both contentious and non-contentious issues across various jurisdictions. You will engage in pre-litigation matters and litigated claims, collaborating closely with the claims handling team on coverage disputes. You will report directly to the Head of Litigation.

Key Responsibilities

Your primary duties will include:

· Crafting detailed and high-quality analyses of coverage, litigation, and settlement strategies, while considering the unique aspects of each case and its broader implications for the claims portfolio and business.

· Offering comprehensive legal advice to the complex and multi-jurisdictional Claims organization, addressing regulatory issues and vendor contracts.

· Effectively communicating with key stakeholders, particularly claims handlers and senior management, both in writing and face-to-face.

· Contributing to the enhancement of litigation management systems and processes in collaboration with other internal units.

· Managing the selection and oversight of qualified external counsel and litigation vendors, while actively partnering with them on daily file management and dispute resolution strategies.

· Acting as a subject matter expert, providing timely legal advice and training to internal stakeholders across our global insurance platform.

· Reporting significant case developments and litigation trends to senior management and maintaining regular communication with internal clients regarding file strategies.

· Overseeing high-profile matters in addition to managing external counsel across a broad spectrum of claims-related litigation and arbitration.

· Focusing on individual and portfolio issues, including choice of law, venue, and policy terms, with a comprehensive view of exposures and opportunities for legal change.

You will collaborate closely with claims teams across various regions, enhancing the feedback loop between underwriting and claims.

Required Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:

· Proven international coverage experience, including litigation, arbitration, and mediation from a reputable law firm.

· Strong academic credentials and qualifications as a solicitor or barrister in the UK.

· Ability to understand all aspects of claims and apply that knowledge to advance the strategic agenda of the global claims organization.

· Experience in drafting and amending policy wordings from a legal perspective.

· Strong research and analytical skills, capable of delivering precise and targeted analysis in a fast-paced environment.

· Strategic thinking capabilities, with the ability to visualize and design innovative solutions.

· Leadership skills, demonstrating the ability to coach and hold team members accountable in a complex environment.

· Excellent drafting skills for both internal documentation and external communications.

· Experience in overseeing e-discovery as necessary.

· Ability to work independently, especially with clients based outside the UK.

· Mental agility and innovative thinking, capable of managing complex financial data and situations.

· Exceptional communication and negotiation skills, able to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels.

· A results-oriented mindset, demonstrating tenacity and high standards for performance.

Preferred Qualifications

· Proficiency in another European language is advantageous but not essential.

· Experience working in-house with a specialty (re)insurer and managing litigation in the UK and abroad is preferred.
