Senior Counsel – Insurance Litigation

We are seeking a seasoned attorney with substantial expertise in insurance coverage disputes to become a vital member of our Litigation team. This group is dedicated to providing legal guidance on first and third-party coverage issues across a diverse array of property, casualty, and specialty insurance sectors, playing a crucial role in our in-house claims legal capabilities. The team also supports claims personnel with everyday legal inquiries and litigation management.

As a Senior Counsel specializing in Insurance Litigation, your role will encompass a wide spectrum of insurance law counsel for claims handlers regarding both contentious and non-contentious issues across various jurisdictions. You will engage in both pre-litigation and litigated claims, collaborating closely with the claims handling team on coverage disputes. You will report directly to the Head of Litigation.

Key Responsibilities

Your primary duties will include:

· Crafting thorough and high-quality coverage assessments, litigation strategies, and settlement plans, considering the specifics of each case and its broader implications on the claims portfolio and business operations.

· Beyond coverage and litigation advice, offering comprehensive legal counsel to our complex, multi-jurisdictional Claims organization, including regulatory matters and vendor contracts.

· Effectively communicating in both written and verbal formats with key stakeholders, particularly claims handlers and senior management.

· Contributing to the enhancement of litigation management systems and processes in collaboration with other internal legal units.

· Supervising the selection and management of qualified, cost-effective external counsel and litigation vendors; actively engaging with outside counsel on daily file management and developing dispute resolution strategies.

· Acting as a subject matter expert and resource for other departments within our global insurance framework by providing timely legal advice and training to internal stakeholders.

· Reporting significant case developments and litigation trends to senior management and maintaining regular communication with internal clients regarding file strategies.

· Providing hands-on management for high-profile cases while overseeing external counsel across a wide range of claims-related litigation and arbitration matters.

· Focusing on individual and portfolio issues, including choice of law/venue and policy terms, while maintaining a comprehensive view of exposures and opportunities for legal reform.

You will work collaboratively with various claims teams across regions, ensuring effective communication and feedback between underwriting and claims.

Required Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:

· Proven international coverage experience, including litigation, arbitration, and mediation from a top-tier law firm.

· Strong legal credentials, including a degree with excellent academic performance and qualifications as a solicitor or barrister in the UK.

· Ability to grasp all aspects of claims and apply that understanding to advance the technical and strategic objectives of the global claims organization.

· Experience in drafting and amending policy wordings from a legal standpoint.

· Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to deliver concise and targeted insights in a fast-paced environment.

· Strategic mindset with the ability to visualize innovative solutions and engage with subject matter experts.

· Leadership capabilities to coach, train, and hold team members accountable in a complex organizational structure.

· Proficient drafting skills for both internal documentation and external communications.

· Experience in overseeing e-discovery processes as needed.

· Ability to work independently, particularly with internal claims handlers based outside the UK.

· Innovative thinking and mental agility to handle complex financial data and scenarios.

· Excellent communication and negotiation skills, capable of engaging effectively with stakeholders at all levels.

· A results-oriented mindset with a strong bias for action and high standards for performance.

Preferred Qualifications

· Proficiency in an additional European language is advantageous but not essential.

· In-house experience with a specialty (re)insurer and familiarity with managing litigation both within and outside the UK is preferred.
